Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has been surprised by the immediate impact Jurgen Klopp has made at Liverpool, but believes the new Liverpool boss needs to be given time. Koeman suggests it was a “very different Liverpool’ side against Tottenham and was surprised in the first 30 minutes of the game. Koeman also warned Klopp saying any team lose to any other team in the Premier League, and there is no room for error.
“He’s had a lot of attention in the press but it isn’t easy as a new manager – you need time,” Koeman said
“I was surprised by Liverpool’s first 30 minutes against Tottenham. It was a different level in the aspect of good, high pressing. Against Rubin Kazan was different, but it takes time to put over everything you want as a new manager.
“New managers bring new details to the team. Maybe there will be a change in the system and some players will have the chance to show their qualities. But it isn’t easy to see a big difference in one or two weeks.
“He should expect that every weekend is very intensive. You don’t have a lot of difference between the clubs and you have to be good to win the game. You can lose against everybody or win against everybody.”
Koeman is confident of beating Liverpool at Anfield after beating defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Dutchman also provided an injury update on striker Shane Long.
Koeman said: “We are confident. The season is going well. We know we had a difficult start, but we’ve had some good wins, some defeats where we have made some mistakes, but I think now if you watch how the team has done over the last few weeks, we are at a good level.
“We showed that at Chelsea away, and it was important to show we are a team that is difficult to beat. If we show our level we can play against anyone.
“Shane Long is still out. He is progressing well. The weekend is too soon to be available but I hope he will be fit again for the next weekend.”
