After defeating Manchester United over two legs, Liverpool face a tricky game against Southampton in the Premier League this weekend. Jurgen Klopp spoke about his team’s top 4 chances in the build up to the game and they will have to take maximum points from this game to keep their hopes of a Champions League spot alive.
However, it will not be easy against a Southampton side that has lost just 2 games in their last 10 in the domestic league. Liverpool looked solid at the back in recent games and will have to continue their form and keep the Southampton front line away from danger for the whole 90 minutes.
Here is the preview of this game along with the team news, predictions, expected line-up and betting odds.
The Southampton vs Liverpool game will be played on Sunday the 20th of March at the St Marys stadium in Southampton. The kick-off is scheduled at 1:30 pm GMT (7:00 pm IST).
Ronald Koeman has been lucky in the injury department this season and does not have any new injuries to deal with for this game. Charlie Austin remains the only injury concern while Jay Rodriguez and Florin Gardos remain as long term injuries. José Fonte, Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mané are however back in action this weekend.
Jurgen Klopp on the other end has a number of fresh injuries to deal with for this trip. In form forward Roberto Firmino is out of this trip as reported in Brazil along with Jordan Henderson and James Milner who are understood to not be fit enough to make the cut for this game. Alberto Moreno is also not expected to return in time from his injury and Jon Flanagan is expected to take his place in the starting line-up.
Forster; Bertrand, Fonte, Van Dijk, Soares; Romeu, Wanyama; Tadic, Davis, Mane; Pelle
Mignolet; Flanagan, Lovren, Sakho, Clyne; Can, Allen; Coutinho, Lallana; Origi, Sturridge
Saido Mane vs Nathaniel Clyne:
Clyne has been superb for Liverpool in this season but he has shown a bit of a weakness against pace and will surely be troubled against Saido Mane who can get past his man with ease. This battle on the wing will be very important for both sides as it can have a great effect on the outcome of the game.
Phillipe Coutinho vs Victor Wanyama:
Coutinho showed his class with his equalizer at Old Trafford and will be the danger man for Southampton in this game. Wanyama who is coming back from a 3 game suspension will have to stay close and afford him no space if Southampton are to keep their goal from being breached.
Liverpool have averaged three goals a game in their previous six Premier League matches, a run that has seen them pick up four wins.
Southampton have lost just one of their last six home games (W4 D1 L1).
Saints haven’t lost three successive home games to Liverpool since December 1996.
Liverpool have scored 13 goals in their last four away Premier League games.
Southampton has won just 1 out of the last 4 games in the Premier League.
They have won just 1 out of their last 3 home games in the Premier League.
Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last 4 league games and will be hoping to make it 5 at St Marys but it will be a tough task for the Reds as Koeman’s man have proven hard to beat in recent times. Both teams are closely matched and this will pave way for a very interesting game this weekend.
Our Prediction: Southampton 1-2 Liverpool
