Sportzwiki Yearly Review: Top Ten Goals Of 2016

Another fantastic year of European football with plenty of goals, but which 10 deserved to be the goals of the year? This year has produced a bumper crop of superb team goals, dipping long-range shots, and some gorgeous individual technique. Yes, Lionel Messi made the list twice, but who else are on the elite list. Enjoy watching these magical moments of the top 10 goals in 2016.

Hal Robson-Kanu vs Belgium

Ramsey dinked a cross into Robson-Kanu who, being tightly marked by Thomas Meunier, produced a superb Cruyff turn which wrongfooted not only Meunier, but Jason Denayer and Marouane Fellaini, before curling past Thibaut Courtois.

Mario Gaspar vs England

Galloping forwards from defence, Gaspar watched a chipped Cesc Fabregas through ball fall over his shoulder before hitting a spinning scissor kick in mid-air past a diving Joe Hart.

Marlone vs Cobresal

Edilson burst down the Corinthians right and delivered a cross slightly behind the No8. Marlone chested the ball in the air and, quick as a flash despite being closed down by Rodrigo Urena, scissor-kicked the ball in mid-air toward goal, seeing it fly past Sebastian Cuerdo.

Eden Hazard vs Liverpool

The Belgian star endured a poor 2015/6 season by his standards but appeared to pick up a little bit of form when he equalised for Chelsea against Tottenham to secure Leicester the first top-flight title in their history. He continued on the back of that with a mazy run past three Liverpool players before curling a right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner from just inside the area.

Lionel Messi vs USA

A 25-yard stunner, taken from the left of the penalty area, hit towards the side in which the goalkeeper, Brad Guzan was standing. The effort was centimetre-perfect, meaning the USA stopper’s dive to keep it out was in vain. With the goal, Messi moved past Gabriel Batistuta as his country’s leading goalscorer.

Neymar vs Villarreal

The ball went from penalty area to penalty area in ten seconds in a brutal Barça counter-attack, with Luis Suarez bursting down the left wing against the Yellow Submarine. His cross infield found Neymar and, three swift touches, and an awesome demonstration of technique, later, the ball was in the net beyond Alphonse Areola.

Saul Niguez vs Bayern Munich

Saul Niguez picked the ball up just inside the Bavarians’ half, faced by a wall of black shirts. He shrugged off the challenge of Thiago Alcantara, danced between Juan Bernat and Xabi Alonso, before bursting into the penalty area. Faced with David Alaba, the No17 opened up his body and curled an effort past Manuel Neuer, despite Arturo Vidal’s despairing dive.

Lionel Messi vs Panama

This goal is without a doubt the finest moment of the tournament in Copa Centenero. Messi’s signature curve is on display as he brings it near post with a calmness no one else can match.

Watch his hat trick from that game but keep an eye on goal number two.

Xherdan Shaqiri vs Poland

Surely the goal of the tournament of Euro 216 in what was a dreadfully dull game. The short, square man the Swiss have dubbed ‘The Power Cube’ decided to say “smack it” before proceeding to bang in an 18-yard bicycle kick screamer against Poland.

He may have swapped Champions League nights in Munich for cold, wet nights in Stoke, but Shaqiri evidently still has the magic.

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Roma

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning strike, that opened the scoring for Real Madrid in their 2-0 knockout stage victory over Roma last season is a treat to watch. The Madrid star cut inside from the left before unleashing a ferocious right-footed strike flew past Wojciech Szczesny at the Stadio Olimpico to inspire the 10-time European Cup winners to a comfortable first-leg victory ahead of the last-16 return leg at the Bernabeu.
