Liverpool football club were handed a boost in their pursuit of a defender earlier today after it was reported that Jurgen Klopp’s long term target, Schalke defender Joel Matip has reportedly rejected a new contract at the club.
The Cameroon international is out of favor at the German franchise and is set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are desperate to land the player and also tried to place a small bid in January to fend off any interests from other clubs in the summer.
However, the German outfit was not willing to let the player go and wanted to conduct talks with his agents on an extension of his contract with the club.
However, Riviersport has now reported that the defender has rejected a new deal with Andre Breitenreiter’s side.
Matip who broke into the first team in 2009-10 season has made 240 appearances for the club but has fallen down the pecking order and is now keen on a move away from the Bundesliga.
Liverpool, who have had loads of problems at the back are in search of a commanding defender and Jurgen Klopp has recognized the 24-year old as a prime target to take the central defense in the Liverpool squad.
His rejection of a contract will surely give the English franchise a hope to sign a pre-contract with the club and it was reported that the German club will announce details about the future of the player in the coming days.
At no transfer cost, Matip is surely a great option for the rebuilding Liverpool side but the summer transfer window might attract interests from other top clubs and if Liverpool do not act quickly, they may not be able to land the free agent this summer though they are favorites to land him at the moment.
