Manchester United were one of the many team in England that managed to break their transfer record in terms of money spent.
They broke the world record for transfer fee with the money they spent on Paul Pogba but had many other players on mind to add to the squad this summer.
One of the many players who were linked with a move to the club was PSG’s star midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Matuidi, who had a decent outing in the last season in France and also in EUROs, was linked with a move to Manchester United, should they miss out on Pogba, and then to Juventus, to fill the gap left by Pogba.
The Italian giants had loads of cash to spend on top transfer targets after getting almost £90m for the midfielder and were looking at a lot of possibilities including Nemanja Matic from Chelsea but it was understood that Matuidi was their top transfer target.
It was revealed that Matuidi was close to a move to Italy but was blocked off by PSG as they were not ready to let go of two star players including Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a single summer.
Matuidi has helped PSG to 4 League 1 titles in his time at the club and has insisted that though he wanted to move away from the club which was blocked, he is still happy in France.
“There was a concrete offer,” Matuidi told French football show Telefoot. “I did want to leave. The club decided otherwise and I had to accept it.”
“It is true that it has been a delicate period for me because I had a wish and that wish was not granted. However, I am not unhappy at PSG. Far from it, in fact, I am very happy,” he added.
The 29-year old only has two years left in his contract and may not be in a hurry to extend it with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus battling for his signature next summer.
Do you think Matuidi will move to the Premier League next summer?
