Liverpool brushed aside the 4th tier Exeter side with a 3-0 victory at Anfield. There were a lot of positives from the game including the showing from Brad Smith, Sheyi Ojo and Kevin Stewart but the talk of the town after the game will be Jon Flanagan.
The right back was in great shape in the 2013/14 Premier League season but fell to an injury. He returned to first team action after more than 18 months in his cameo against Exeter in the second half.
The hard-tackling English wing back is a traditional defender who loves to keep his flank away from danger. But he also has a keenness to add to the team’s play at the other end and his return to the squad will bolster the options for the manager German Klopp.
Before the Exeter game, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has left the club before the start of the season has once again shown that he is still thinking about his former team mates.
Jon Flanagan a local Liverpool lad has come through the Merseyside ranks over the years and is one of the fan favorites at Anfield. Steven Gerrard showed his tribute to the returning player on social network.
Gerrard just before the game used Instagram to make aware his followers the significance of the defender returning to full fitness. Attaching an emotional tribute, it gained 70,000 likes in less than 2 hours.
It read, “So happy to see this fella close to returning to fitness . . He has put so much graft in to get himself back fit. I’m sure anfield will erupt when he runs back onto the pitch after an 18-month layoff …good luck mate great to see you back and we have missed you #cafu”
However, Flanagan is far from a first choice right back at Liverpool with Nathaniel Clyne doing really well this season. It is apparent that the local lad will have to fight it out for a place in the squad.
The 23-year-old showed great potential before his injury and will hope to blossom into a player once promised to be under the new manager Jurgen Klopp.
