Sturridge might start against Aston Villa: Jurgen Klopp

After a big week for the Red of Merseyside with all the talk about ticket prices now talking a side foot, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was out facing the press on the eve of the game against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The first question naturally was about the owners and their apology issued to the public. The German felt that FSG, the owners of the club are doing everything to take Liverpool back to where it belongs.

He said, “I think in the world of football it’s difficult to be an owner – to prove that you are really interested in the club.

“I’ve been here four and a half months and I know our owners really care about the club and the supporters. The reaction was a clear sign. Proof of their real interest.”

The Liverpool manager gave an injury update ahead of the clash at Villa Park. He had some good news as he revealed that striker Daniel Sturridge was looking fit and may be even ready to start the game on Sunday.

“He played about 70 minutes against West Ham and was involved in all training afterwards. So it was good,” Klopp said.

“I’ve heard nothing else but of course we have to think about how we manage his minutes. He made a big step in the last week.”

“Up until now I have made no final decisions with starting lineup. But everything is like it should be.”

He also revealed that Joe Allen and Dejan Lovren are out for this game but said that Steven Caulker will be available after missing out on the game against West Ham.

“Joe Allen is unfortunately out for a while. He was in a really good way, we tried to manage time after injury when I came, but then he gets a little knock on the shoulder. We have to wait a little bit for him.

“Lovren will not be available for Villa but hopefully for the next game. Skrtel is back on the pitch but need time.

“Steven Caulker had back problems before West Ham but is available now.”

Klopp was all praises for the Brazilian play maker Phillipe Coutinho as he explained that he has a great influence on the squad. He said, “Phil is always someone who can make a difference in a game. It’s not possible that he is at 100 per cent, but he is in a really good way.

“For us it is good news – for sure.”

After the defeat to West Ham, one of the few positives were the young players who made their impression on the first team.

Klopp explained how the youngsters will be given their chances at the club and that it was good to see them accept the challenge.

Klopp said, “It was a perfect opportunity (at West Ham) for us to show our faith in them and for them to show how good they are.

“It is really hard to get the smile off Cameron Stewart’s face in this moment.

“Brad Smith with his speed he will always be in situations like he was in the game – but you could see where he needs to improve.

“Brad has an injury after the game, we thought it was cramp but it is a little bit more.

“Tiago Ilori – when I came here I didn’t know he was a Liverpool player.

“They gave the sign – but now it is all about consistency. They have to go on and accept the situation and it is really important they see the positives. They made the next step.”

The manager was also questioned about the possibility of Daniel Sturridge and out of favor striker Christian Benteke forming a partnership. He felt that it was a possibility but explained that the decision of playing a team would depend on the caliber of the opposition.

“Daniel and Christian can play together as we saw. Daniel and Divock can play together. But it is all about what you need for a certain opponent.

“You cannot ignore the other team.

“When all the players stay fit – we can train. Yesterday and the day before we had really good sessions. Now let’s go to Aston Villa.

“You can say Villa have nothing to lose anymore – they have to take risks. But it is not coincidence they are in this place (bottom of the Premier League).

“That’s how you prepare a game. Of course at the end it is not our thing to think about what Aston Villa’s target is. We have to do everything to reach our target.”
