Scoring goals is arguably the most important part of a football game. There are clubs who rely on the cliché that they can outscore the opponents no matter how good they are. Scoring 5 goals in a game will give great confidence to the club but when a player scored 5 in a game, it gives the fans their money’s worth.
We have recently seen Aguero score 5 goals in a game against Newcastle United. Here is a list all the players who have achieved the feat in the history of the Premier League.
1. Sergio Aguero – Manchester City (2015)
Sergio Aguero showed his class in the game against Newcastle United at the Etihad recently. City went a goal down in the first half but the Argentine had no mery over the away team as he swept in 5 past the helpless opponents. He was at the right place at the right time and his finishing was as good as ever giving him the fastest 5 goal haul in the history of the Premier League.
2. Dimitar Berbatov – Manchester United (2010)
In the month of November in 2010, Manchester United handed a footballing lesson to Blackburn Rovers at the Old Trafford. The Bulgarian ace was in fine form and gave the lead early in the game for the home team. He then went on to put 4 more past the Blackburn keeper as Manchester United ran away 7-1 winners in one of the most memorable days of the season.
3. Jermain Defoe – Tottenham Hotspurs (2009)
Tottenham Hotspur took on Wigan Athletic at the White Hart lane for a Premier League game in 2009. Jermaine Defoe who was in scintillating form leading into the game gave Tottenham one of their biggest victories ever in the Premier League. Defoe scored 5 times in the second half even as his team mates scored 4 more to give the hosts a 9-1 victory over the travelling side.
4. Alan Shearer – Newcastle United (1999)
Newcastle United took on Sheffield Wednesday for the first leg of the Premier League fixture at the St James Park in 1999. Alan Shearer was the hero of the match as Newcastle humiliated Sheffield as they put 8 past their goal. Shearer scored 5 goals on the day including two penalties and gave the Newcastle fans something to remember for a long time.
5. Andy Cole – Manchester United (1995)
Andy Cole was known for his goal scoring record at his helm for the Manchester giants. He has scored a number of hatricks for the club in his prime and was one of their best players at the time. In 1995, at the Old Trafford, United met Ipswich Town for a League encounter which ended in a resounding 9-0 victory for Untied. Andy Cole scored 5 goals in the game and became the first player to do so in the Premier League era. He came close to repeating the feat a couple of times but this was his best performance in a United shirt.
Over the years, we have seen many players put 5 past teams across Europe. It is a feast to watch such free goal-scoring but the defenders deserve a bit of sympathy as they are not always responsible for such poor showing.
