Manchester United, for some odd reason have failed to produce goal-scoring midfield players in the Premier League. Apart from Paul Scholes, no central midfield player has come anywhere close to scoring 10-15 goals for two or three consecutive seasons.

This puzzle seems to have been answered this season by the goals from Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera for United. I truly believe that, goals from these three men from midfield has been the biggest reason why United have looked a different team this season in crucial games.

Manchester United have failed to field a midfield player since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and glory days of Paul Scholes who can score 10-15 goals from midfield. Historically, United have always been dependent on their strikers to produce the goals, which at times turns out to be their weakness in big games.

Manchester United team has never looked the same since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in 2009. Ronaldo offered a constant goal threat from the midfield. The Portuguese superstar scored 20+ goal in each of his last 3 seasons with the club. One of those seasons was the 2007-08 Champions League winning campaign where he crossed the 40 goal mark.

Sir Alex never really could sign a goal scoring midfield player during his time. David Moyes signed two in Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata but never could make it work with the duo but Louis Van Gaal has managed to fine tune the two stars, who are now scoring with a comfortable ease.

One major reason why Manchester United have done well this season has been the goals from midfield. United have scored 24 goals from midfield with Juan Mata (8), Ander Herrera (5) and Marouane Fellaini (5) being the key contributors. Angel Di Maria has 3 goals and 10 assists to his name while Ashley Young has popped up with 2 goals as well.

Louis Van Gaal stresses on possession football and what it does is that, it gives every player including the midfielders enough chance to influence the game. With time and space over the ball, United look a constant goal threat and that too from all the various areas of the pitch. This one major difference this season has lifted United’s form and helped them perform in big games.
