Smoking is injurious to health, but it is the most popular addictions throughout the world. Smoking is very addictive because tobacco contains a powerful drug called nicotine. Cigarettes are deliberately designed to give you a fast nicotine hit. It takes less than 20 seconds for the drug to reach your brain from inhaled cigarette smoke. Nicotine causes addiction in much the same way as heroin or cocaine. 

The practice was believed to begin as early as 5000–3000 BC. But, if one is addicted, then he rarely follows the disclaimer written in the packet of Cigarette that is “Smoking causes cancer.”

Footballers are also human and despite the game needs a huge stamina and work rate, some footballers are addicted to cigarettes even though it harms them even more. Legendary footballers like Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Zinedine Zidane used to smoke at their prime and still delivered on the highest stage.

1> Jack Wilshere- The Arsenal midfielder has been caught on camera while smoking many times. The 23-year-old English international was even criticized of the fact that it affects his performances.

2> Ashley Cole- Former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole, who plays for AS Roma now, is also a regular smoker.

3> Wayne Rooney- The England and Manchester United captain is a regular smoker.

4> Mesut Ozil- The German and Arsenal attacking midfielder has been spotted smoking many times.

5> Dimitar Berbatov- Former Manchester United and Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov is a regular smoker. His lazy attitude on the pitch is reasoned for his addiction for Cigarettes.

6> Mario Balotelli– The crazy Italian also smokes a lot which is one of his off-field activities for which, he often makes the headlines.

7> Neymar- The 23-year-old Brazilian and Barcelona superstar has also been spotted smoking few times.

8> Gigi Buffon- The Italian goalkeeper, one of the best in the game ever, also smokes.

9> Wojciech Szczęsny-  The Arsenal goalkeeper, currently on loan at AS Roma is a chain smoker and has been caught once while smoking in the dressing room.

10> Lionel Messi- This may shock many but yes, The 4 times Ballon d’Or Winner and one of the best players to grace the football pitch ever, Leo Messi is also a smoker.
