Jose Mourinho and his experience helped Chelsea lift the Barclays Premier League and the Capital One Cup in the 2014-15 season although they were not successful in the Champion League. They will want to continue their form from the previous campaign into the new season which is set to begin in less than a month.
In this article, we take a look at the Strengths and Weaknesses of the defending champions in the Premier League and try to establish an understanding of what to expect from the London based franchise.
Chelsea are known for their solidarity in front of goal and are one of the most disciplined sides in the Premier League. The likes of Cahill and Terry along with Zouma helped the club to a title in the previous season. Matic has been one of the most effective defensive midfielders in the previous season and all this meant that the club let in just 32 goals, the least by any team in the previous season.
Their strength in defense is complemented by the trickery and world loads of Fabregas, Hazard, Oscar and Willian and along with the new boy Caudrado, they will create plenty of chances and can beat many of the teams in the Premier League. Their approach play and patience with the ball is something that most teams can learn from. Their discipline is also a key factor for their brace in the recently concluded season.
Though Chelsea netted an impressive 73 goals only bettered by Manchester City, they will need a solid pair up front after the arrival of the United flop striker Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco. Remy and Costa do provide the fire power needed but the exit of the club great Didier Drogba will leave a bit of a void and Mourinho will need an able replacement for the strikers position.
With the club competing on all four fronts, it will be hard to have a fit squad for the whole season as many teams learned in the last term. Chelsea lack a bit of depth in their squad and will want to add enough ammunition before the transfer window closes.
Though they were initially linked with the Juventus mid-fielder Paul Pogba, a public statement from Mourinho ended all rumors from that front. However, they are planning to up the bid for Everton starlet John Stones after an intial bid fell through. That would be a sensible buy with the club needing a bit of depth in the squad. They are also in for the Barcelona wantaway star Pedro Rodriguez who will add more experience to the squad.
They however, lost Petr Cech to Arsenal but signed Asmir Begovic as a deputy to the impressive Thibaut Courtois. So with not a lot of business done till now, Mourinho may be thinking that he already possesses the squad to challenge for the trophy for the second season on the trot.
The Chamapions started their pre season games with two simple 1-0 victories and already look a side full of confidence. But with all big sides in the league spending huge amounts to bring more talent into their squad, Chelsea will have a lot of competition in trying to defend the title.
