Of the many player Merseyside club Liverpool missed out on in the last few years, Dele Alli is one that the club will rue for a long time to come.
The mid-fielder who moved to London franchise Tottenham last summer was on Liverpool’s radar but Brendan Rodgers and his infamous transfer committee managed to let the player slip from their hands.
Ever since, Alli has grown on to be a consistent player in the mid-field for the Spurs and is now in the middle of title challenge under Mauricio Pochettino.
Liverpool’s emphasis on the player did not end that window as club legend Steven Gerrard earlier this year showered praises on the 19-year old England international who is playing a huge part in Tottenham’s title race.
Gerrard said that he was disappointed that his former club missed out on a quality player and that he will be a huge asset for the Spurs for years to come.
At 19-years of age, Dele Alli has been exceptional this season in the midfield as he has shown maturity beyond the years and has grown on to become one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League this season.
In a recent interview, he revealed that former England skipper Steven Gerrard was his idol and that it would be a dream come true to be able to meet him in person.
He explained that he was a big fan of the ex-Liverpool captain and said that he would imitate him when he was small including the shoes he wears.
“Steven Gerrard was someone I looked up to massively. I’d always try to copy him, right down to the boots he was wearing,” the mid-fielder said.
Gerrard in his time at Liverpool was known for his incredible leadership abilities and his never say die attitude and Alli explained that these traits made the Liverpool legend a special player.
“His attitude on the pitch that stood out – you could really see how much he hated losing,” added Alli.
Alli also recollected a memorable moment for the captain and Liverpool as a whole when Gerrard gave Liverpool a late goal against West Ham in his typical fashion to lift the FA Cup a few years ago.
Alli explained that it was one of the first goals he remembers as a youngster and that this moment stands out for him in Gerrard’s stellar career.
“The moment that stands out is the goal against West Ham in the FA Cup final. It was a great moment in a huge game, and a great finish too. It’s one of the first goals I remember seeing,” he explained.
The 19-year old ended by saying that it was his dream to meet the ex-Liverpool skipper in person and that though he has a picture with him, that he would love to talk to him in person.
Alli added, “I had a picture with him when I was younger, but I’ve never spoken to him. I think he’d probably be the only person that would make me a bit star-struck!”
