Tottenham Hotspur fans are set for a worrying summer after reports have emerged that Manchester United are set to make in-form Dele Alli their number one transfer target.
According to football insider Vincent Rodriguez, former colleague of Jorge Mendes, United have given manager Jose Mourinho the approval to launch an incredible bid for the 20-year-old England international.
This season has seen Alli become the hottest property in the Premier League, with 13 goals for Spurs so far this term. Such has been the youngsters prolific rise within the footballing ranks since his arrival from MK Dons two seasons ago, the club recently rewarded the striker with a new six-year contract worth a reported £60,000 per week.
According to Rodriguez however, this has not dissuaded Mourinho from his interest in the player. Reportedly on the United boss’ radar since last season, the insider claims that Spurs would be willing to sell their young star, but only for the eye-watering world record fee of £100 million.
The club does however, have a history of offloading their best talent. As recently as 2013, Spurs cashed in on Gareth Bale when Real Madrid tangled a then world record fee of £86 million in front of the London club.
Spurs fans will certainly not want the likes of United or any other club sniffing around their star player, who along with Harry Kane, has supercharged their side’s elevation into the title race again this season.
The thought of spending £100 million for a 20-year-old beggars belief and critics could easily suggest the league has lost all sense of reality.
The Premier League is, however, enjoying a period of unparalleled wealth following a number of lucrative television rights deals in recent seasons. With clubs receiving massive annual windfalls, there is simply no player beyond the reach of top clubs.
It could be an interesting summer.
