Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United
Liverpool 2-0 Manchester United

It was a clash between Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United in the Europa League, as the two sides faced off in the first leg of their round of 16 clashes. The two teams were not really performing well in the domestic competition, but it was expected to be an intense battle on the night at Anfield. The home side started the match on the front foot, as they constantly kept pushing for a goal and were awarded a penalty prior to the 20-minute mark, which Daniel Sturridge scored from the spot. David de Gea was tested on numerous occasions till the break including a few good chances for Coutinho and Sturridge though the Spanish international managed to keep the Reds out and the half ended at 1-0.

After the restart, things did not really improve for Louis van Gaal’s side who were being dominated in every aspect of the game. Though there were no more goals beyond the hour
mark, the Red Devils failed to leave their mark on the game. On the 73rd minute, it was Roberto Firmino who scored the second to double the lead for his side. The Brazilian had a
great night at the Merseyside, as he toyed around the opposition defence and surely deserved a goal to his name. The game ended at 2-0, as there were no more goals and
Van Gaal as always looked displeased with his side’s performance on the night. The hosts now head into the second leg with a two-goal advantage.
