Two Top European Stars Watched During International Break, Mourinho Ready For Surprise Bid

Despite a summer of big spending, Manchester United’s activity in the transfer market looks set to continue under Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese oversaw the arrivals of Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly and free agent Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the summer. But the United boss has already had scouts watching further targets during the international break.

While Bastian Schweinsteiger’s future is, without a doubt, away from Old Trafford, the futures of Morgan Schneiderlin, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw have all been brought into question in recent weeks.

Mourinho is still looking to make further improvements to his Red Devils side that has yet to kickstart their campaign in the Premier League, and currently sit sixth in the league with 19 points from 12 games.

But while the international break is seen as a hinderance to both clubs and fans, it gave the Portuguese the perfect chance to send scouts to watch their transfer targets in action. And it appears United are ready to make a further high-profile signing.

As per the Mirror, Mourinho had highly-rated Bayern Munich defender David Alaba watched twice while on international duty with Austria, alongside his Austria teammate, Julian Baumgartlinger, of Bayer Leverkusen.

And a move for the Bayern star would command a hefty fee, having only signed a new deal in March, that will keep him at the club until 2021.

Mourinho sees Alaba as a versatile signing, with the 24-year-old capable of playing in both defence and midfield, while the Portuguese is looking to find new options for the left side of his defence and a defensive midfielder.

It is understood United may have to fend off interest from Real Madrid, who are also considering a move for the Bayern star who has already won five Bundesliga titles and the Champions League at a young age.

And it is the Bayern star’s youthfulness and experience that has Mourinho hoping he can add the Austrian to his squad.

But the United boss is also hopeful of adding Baumgartlinger to his ranks, despite the 28-year-old having only joined Leverkusen on a four-year deal in the summer, after a five-year spell at Mainz.

The midfielder is seen as a potential replacement for Schneiderlin, who has made just eight appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils so far this season.

Mourinho will likely find it hard to acquire to the Austrian duo’s services, with both players having signed contracts with their respective clubs just this year. And with the United boss undoubtedly targeting further signings, it remains to be seen how important they feature on his list of targets.
