UCL Match Report Semifinal (First Leg): Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid

Ronaldo’s hat-trick strongly put Real Madrid one step ahead for UCL 2016/17 final as they beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the 1st leg of the semi-final.

On Tuesday night, Cristiano Ronaldo’s superb efforts brought a 3-0 victory for Real Madrid in the UCL derby clash at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Ronaldo’s 7th UCL hat-trick helped Real beat Atletico Madrid by a favourable margin of 3-0.

The hosts began this match with a 4-3-3 formation. In the absence of Gareth Bale, Isco joined Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in the forward line.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid started with the formation of 4-4-2 as Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro were the main strikers.

From the very beginning, the Los Blancos clearly showed their intention to attack in the opponent half. Real had a superb chance to open their scoreline in just 7 minutes, after Carvajal came close at the post by playing a one-two with Isco. After that, Carvajal took a shot which was blocked by the Atletico’s goalie Jan Oblak. In the return ball, Benzema had a great opportunity to score from close range but the French striker hugely disappointed as he failed to put on target.

However just 3 minutes later, Ronaldo opened the scoreline for Real with a header. Initially, Ronaldo was offside when Ramos produced a cross which was blocked by Stefan Savic (Atletico Madrid) with a header to deny any contact from Ronaldo. In the return delivery, Casemiro’s a superb volley resulted in a perfect Ronaldo header. There was no issue during Casemiro’s delivery as Ronaldo was onside during that moment.

On 16 minutes, Kroos made a curling cross from a corner which found Varane whose header superbly saved by Oblak.

In the next minute, Atletico Madrid made their first proper attack as Koke provided an excellent ball for Gameiro but Gameiro failed to make any proper contact thanks to an excellent display by Keylor Navas. Understanding the situation, Navas attacked the ball and timely dived to deny any danger for his team.

On 29 minutes, Ronaldo showed a great skill before making a fantastic cross for Benzema, who posted an incredible bicycle kick which unluckily went just over the bar.

On 32 minutes, Griezmann made a brilliant free-kick with a chip for Koke who fired that well over the post from close range.

Real Madrid were desperate to add more goals to their tally but the first half ended with only a 1-0 lead for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid disappointed very much in their final third performances as they failed to produce any shots on target before the break.

The picture didn’t much change in the second half as Atletico Madrid made only one shot on target while Real was busy to strengthen their position.

In the first 25 minutes of the second half, there was no strong attack from both sides to the opponent halves.

Ronaldo accounted his second goal of the match in 73 minutes. Marcelo brilliantly sent a ball for Benzema, who beat the defenders and produced a ball for Ronaldo. The Portuguese smashed that to the top left corner of the net.

Ronaldo completed his hat-trick on 85 minutes. From the back of the net in Atletico’s box, Vazquez made a pass which found Ronaldo as the star made no mistake to finish that in style. It was his 7th hat-trick in UCL which is the joint most number of UCL hat-trick by a player along with Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
