UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifiers Round-up – Rooney creates history, while some shock results across Europe

The Qualifying round of the UEFA Euro 2016 has seen some close matches and some of the groups are still poised for a final day finish. But many teams have already qualified for the final tournament even as two more games are left in the Qualifying round. In this article, we will take a look at all the results of the games played on the 8th of September.

Belarus 2-0 Luxembourg

This Group C encounter between two teams who are already out of the group stage saw the home team Belarus take all three points. This is just their second victory thanks to a brace from M Gordeychuk. Luxembourg is now 5th on the table with just one win and one draw in the group stage.

England 2-0 Switzerland

England continued their undefeated streak in group E with a 2-0 victory over Switzerland. Harry Kane opened the scoring for the English while Rooney found the net from the spot in the closing stages. The England skipper broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goal scorer’s record for England with his goal against Switzerland. The group is still open as Switzerland should fight with two other countries for two qualifying spots.

FYR Macedonia 0-1 Spain

An early goal from Juan Mata was enough to settle this Group C encounter. Macedonia has just won a single game in the qualifiers and is in the last position in the group. Spain has already qualified from the group and this win gave them a two-point lead over second placed Slovakia.

Liechtenstein 0-7 Russia

Liechtenstein had a night to forget at home against Russia as they let 7 goals past in this Group G game. A Dzyuba scored a brace on either side of the break as Russia humiliated Liechtenstein who is already eliminated from the tournament. Russia even after the victory is just 2 points ahead of third-placed Sweden and will need another victory to stay in the hunt.

Lithuania 2-1 San Marino

San Marino looked like nicking a point from this Group E fixture against Lithuania, but a late strike from L Spalvis gave the home team all three points. San Marino failed to win even a single game in the group and are already eliminated. Lithuania kept their slim chances alive with this victory.

Moldova 0-2 Montenegro

Montenegro took three crucial points from this Group G game against Moldova on Tuesday. S Savic and P Race were on target for Montenegro and with this victory, they are just a point behind Sweden in 3rd place. Moldova has just two points from 8 games and is eliminated already.

Slovakia 0-0 Ukraine

This game between two teams who have already qualified for the final tournament from Group C, ended in a goalless draw at the Stadion Pod Dubnom in Zilina. Ukraine lost a chance to take the 2nd spot from Slovakia in the Group and now lie third just 2 points behind the hosts.

Slovenia 1-0 Estonia

Slovenia won a very important game at home against Estonia as both teams are still in the race for qualification. This victory puts the hosts in the third place in Group E just 2 points ahead of Estonia. R Beric scored the only goal in the game. Estonia has a mountain to climb as their remaining games are against the top two teams in the group.

Sweden 1-4 Austria

Sweden were beaten high and dry by Group toppers Austria in this Group G fixture. The hosts lost a chance to take a leap into the second spot but are just two points behind Russia. M Hammik scored a brace for Austria who sit comfortably at the top of the table with an 8 point lead over Russia.

UEFA Euro 2016: Qualifiers Round-up – World Champions survive Scot resilience to win 3-2

The qualifiers for the UEFA Euro 2016 have kept many a football fan busy during the international break. The quality of football played by the national teams is growing day by day and the Euro Cup that will be held in France next year promises to be an exciting affair. This article gives you all the scores of the matches that took place on the 7th of September in the qualifying stage of the competition.

Albania 0-1 Portugal

A game between two teams that have already qualified for the final tournament saw Portugal take all three points with a solitary goal. Miguel Veloso scored the winner in extra time to give Portugal a victory that lifts them to the top spot in Group I. Albania are in the third position and will be trying hard in the next games to finish in the top 2.

Finland 1-0 Faroe Islands

Group F is still an open affair with just one team qualifying for the final tournament. Finland did no harm their chances of qualifying by taking all three points at home against the Faroe Islands. J Pohjanpalo scored a 23rd-minute goal that was enough to see of Faroe. They are now in the 4th spot 3 points behind 3rd placed Hungary. The Faroe Islands have been eliminated from the tournament.

Northern Ireland 1-1 Hungary

Northern Ireland was lucky to take a point from this game as K Lafferty’s late goal cancelled out the 74th minute R Guzmics’ goal for Hungary. Northern Ireland has already qualified for the final stage from Group F and Hungary are fighting a three-way battle against Finland and Romania for two final spots.

Poland 8-1 Gibraltar

Gibraltar is the only team in Group D that is yet to take a point out of 8 games played. They have lost all their games and Poland piled on the misery by putting 8 past their sloppy defense. K Grosicki, R Lewandowski and A Milik all scored twice and gave the home team a victory which puts them just 2 points behind group leaders Germany. J Gosling was the only goal scorer for Gibraltar.

Republic of Ireland 1-0 Georgia

Georgia who is already eliminated from Group D gave away all three points to Ireland who are battling it out for the final spots. J Walters scored the only goal of the game and Ireland now sit in the 3rd position in the table just 2 points behind second-placed Poland. 

Romania 0-0 Greece

Greece has not yet been able to win a game in the euro qualifiers this season. They, however, held on to a 0-0 draw against Romania who fluffed a chance to top the table with a victory in this match. Romania has almost qualified for the final tournament and is placed 2nd in the group table just two points behind Northern Ireland in Group F

Scotland 2-3 Germany

The World Cup winners gave a sore lesson to Scotland who are on the brink of elimination after this defeat. Thomas Muller scored twice and Ilkay Gundagon scored once for Germany even after Matt Hummels gave Scotland a lifeline with an own goal. J McArthur scored a goal just before the break, but it was not enough as Germany ran away with all three points. They now sit at the top of the table in Group D. Scotland are placed 4th and need other results to be in their favor if they want a chance of qualifying.

Video: Qualifier Round-up of 9 matches – Turkey 3-0 Netherlands, Dutch in danger of missing out on Euro 2016

The 2016 UEFA Euro Cup will be held in France, but the Qualifiers have kept the football fans busy in this international break. Some groups have already been decided and some will go to the last day of the Qualifiers. This article is a glance at the results of the games played on Sunday the 6th of September.

Latvia 1-2 The Czech Republic

The Group A encounter between Latvia and the Czech Republic ended in a close victory for the travelling party. D Limbersky and V Darida were on target for Czech as they took all three points from the game and are now in the 2nd place in the group behind only on goal difference. Latvia, on the other hand, has already been eliminated from the group. 

Malta 2-2 Azerbaijan

Two teams already eliminated from the tournament met in Group H encounter. The game ended in a 2-2 draw which gave the fans plenty to talk about. M Miffsud and Effiong were on target for the hosts, but a brace from R Amirquliyev made sure that the teams share the points on the day.

Norway 2-0 Croatia

Another Group H encounter between two teams at the top of the table. Croatia had a chance to seal their place with a victory on the day but gave all three points to the hosts. J Berget’s goal along with an own goal from Corluka gave Norway the victory as they are now sitting just 2 points behind leaders Italy in the group.

Turkey 3-0 Netherlands

Turkey gave Netherlands yet another beating as they scored three past the Dutch in a home game. O Ozyakup, Arda Turan and B Yilmaz were all on target as they beat Netherlands 3-0 in the Group game. This game gave Turkey a two-point advantage over the Dutch as they now lie in the 3rd position in the group.

Wales 0-0 Israel

In the Group B encounter, 3rd placed Israel did well to keep the top placed Wales at bay at Cardiff on Sunday. Israel would have loved all their points but now are in a race to the final tournament with three teams fighting for a single spot.

Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 Andorra

Bosnia is another Group B team fighting for that one place they did their chances no harm with a 3-0 victory against bottom-placed Andorra. Andorra is already eliminated from the tournament and has not been able to get even a single point from the Qualifiers. E Bicakcic, Edin Dzeko and S Lulic were on target for the hosts.

Cyprus 0-1 Belgium

Cyprus is the third team fighting for that one spot in Group B. However, they lost all three points from their home game against a spirited Belgium side who have already qualified for the final tournament. An 86th-minute strike from Eden Hazard was enough to see off Cyprus who are now placed 5th in the group.

Iceland 0-0 Kazakhstan

Bottom-placed Kazakhstan was able to hold Group A toppers Iceland in a game that did not produce a goal. Kazakhstan will be happy to have not lost against the in-form team in the competition. It will give their fans something to cheer about after their nation was already eliminated from the tournament.

Italy 1-0 Bulgaria

An Early strike from D de Rossi was enough for Italy to see off Bulgaria who were desperately in need of points to stay in the tournament. This loss almost confirms Bulgaria’s elimination from the tournament and their future depends on Croatia’s appeal against the point they were deducted due to Racist behavior by UEFA. Italy sits on top of the table having qualified for the final tournament.

Highlights: Euro 2016 Qualifiers – De Bruyne scored a screamer, Bale scored a header to take Wales closer to France

The break in the club calendar in the month of September will see a host of nations battle it out for a spot in the 2016 Euro Cup to be held in France. The fans all around Europe will be supporting their nation when they take on the teams in their group on Matchday 7 which will be played over three days.

Here is a round-up of all the qualifiers played on the 3rd of September along with the results.

Azerbaijan 0-0 Croatia

This Group H encounter did not see any goals and Azerbaijan have now lost the chance to finish in the top 2 spots. Croatia, on the other hand, sits pretty in the second spot just one point behind leaders Italy. They are yet to lose a game and will play 3rd placed Norway on the 6th of September.

Belgium 3-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina

Belgium beat Bosnia 3-1 in a match that was dominated by the visitors. Fellaini, Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard were all on target in the victory which pushed them to the second spot in Group B. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring on the night but lost the game and are in the 5th position in the group.

Bulgaria 0-1 Norway

A mid-table clash in Group H saw Norway take a 5 point lead over Bulgaria who is placed fourth in the table. V Forren scored the only goal in the game 12 minutes into the second half and gave Norway a bit of breathing space before they face Croatia a few days later.

Cyprus 0-1 Wales

Gareth Bale scored a powerful header to give Wales all the three points in the Group B encounter against a Cyprus side that were unlucky to lose. A winner in the 82nd minute by Bale ensured that Wales hangs on to the top spot and qualify for the final tournament. 

The Czech Republic 2-1 Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan took on the Czech Republic even they were eliminated from the group stage failing to win even a single game in the group stage. Though Y Logvinenko opened the scoring for Kazakhstan, a brace from M Skoda ensured that Czech stays at the 2nd spot just 2 points behind leaders Iceland.

 

Israel 4-0 Andorra

Israel made light work of their opponents Andorra in a goal feast that saw the home side put four past their opponents. E. Zahavi, N Biton, T Hemed and M Dabbur gave Israel a 4 goal lead inside the 38th minute as they won the game. They are now placed 3rd in Group B and are fighting for the top 2 spots.

Italy 1-0 Malta

Italy took full advantage of the slip-up from Croatia to regain the top spot in Group H with an unconvincing victory over Malta who are already eliminated from the tournament. G Pelle the Southampton striker gave the hosts the lead in the 69th minute and gave them all three points on the day.

Netherlands 0-1 Iceland

The Dutch had a game to forget at the Amsterdam Arena as they saw their star player, Arjen Robben limp off the field even as Gilfy Sigurdsson gave Iceland the lead after halftime. Iceland has qualified for the main tournament after this victory and Netherlands have a huge game to play against Turkey who is just a point behind them in Group A.

Turkey 1-1 Latvia

Turkey lets go of a chance to claim the third spot in the group after Netherlands lost to Iceland earlier. S Inan gave the hosts the lead in the 77th minute, but Turkey let the lead slip in extra time as V Sabala scored a sublime goal to pinch a point of Turkey. Latvia now is in the 5th position and cannot finish in the top two places in the group.
