Real Madrid’s amazing 22 game winning streak came to end as Valencia beat them 2-1 in a thrilling game. Real Madrid led through Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored from the spot (Yet Again) only to see two of Valencia’s defender Antonio Barragan and Nicolas Otamendi put the home side ahead and it stayed like that at the full time whistle.

It has not been a great start to the new year for Real Madrid as they lost a friendly against AC Milan (4-2) and now with this defeat have not started the year in the way Carlo Ancelotti’s side would have hoped for.

Real Madrid opened the scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the penalty on 14′ minute mark, but missed a great opportunity minutes later to double Madrid’s lead. Cristiano rounded the keeper Diego Alves only to find his shot misisng the target from a tight angle. Had Cristiano scored his second on the night, things would have gone differently for Real Madrid.

Second half belonged to Valencia as they they took just seven minutes in the half to level the score from Barragan’s deflected shot. Otamendi found himself clear in the area from a corner to put Valencia ahead with a powerful header. Tonight’s loss was the first since Real Madrid lost to their rivals Atletico in the league on 13th September.

Ironically enough, Real Madrid will play Atletico Madrid next in the Copa-Del-Ray against their neighbors and the game could see Fernando Torres make his second debut for Atletico as he has joined them on loan for the rest of this season. After the defeat, Carlo Ancelotti backed his side to be “Fine”despite the defeat. Ancelotti said:

“There were important points of the match where we didn’t take our chances, but as I’ve said in football this happens. You can’t always be efficient up front.

“I don’t think it will affect the team. It has happened after 22 victories.

“The season is very long and we are well-positioned in La Liga and have a lot of competitions.

“This won’t affect us because we know all the things we have done well until now.”

Real Madrid lead the La Liga standings despite the defeat as Barcelona lost to Real Sociadad on the night as well. Valencia have just lost one game this season and the victory over Real Madrid has lifted them into the Champions League places.
