Two of the traditional powerhouses of English football- Arsenal and Liverpool- are set to renew their rivalry when the team from Merseyside travel to the Emirates Stadium to open their 2016-17 season.
The two giants have, over the years, been involved in numerous memorable clashes against each other and the fixture this weekend has all the ingredients to be another one to remember. Ahead of the game on Sunday (August 14), here is a look at the five most memorable clashes between the two sides in the Premier League.
5. Liverpool 3-0 Arsenal, 28 August 1994:
A 19-year old Robbie Fowler, who was playing only his second season in the top flight, ran riot against Arsenal when he bagged a hat-trick in only four minutes and 33 seconds to leave the gunners shell shocked.
Fowler opened the scoring in 26th minute when Arsenal defender Martin Keown failed to clear a cross from a free kick. The ball dropped to the feet of Fowler, who scored with a simple finish. Three minutes later he bagged his second after sending the ball in off a rebound from the far post. His third goal was the best of the lot. In the 31st minute, he beat both Keown and goalkeeper David Seaman, who collided with each other, then slotted the ball into the open net from a tough angle. The visitors failed to recover from that outburst and eventually lost the match by 3-0.
