Goal Keepers scoring a goal is always a thing of joy to see and everyone loves it. Simply because if a Goal Keeper scores it is normally in the last minute of the game with the last chance for his side to manage a draw from a losing position.

We saw exactly the same thing in Bundesliga this weekend when Augsburg drew 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer were Leverkusen leading 2-1 when Augsburg were given a corner with last few seconds remaining and up stepped Augsburg keeper Marwin Hitz.

Augsburg played the corner, initially it was headed out by Leverkusen but Augsburg kept the pressure on and crossed again. Eventually ball came to Marwin Hitz and the Goal Keeper rescued the point for Augsburg. Interestingly this was Hitz’s first match since November.

After scoring Marwin Hitz became only the third goalkeeper to score in Bundesliga from open play after Frank Rost and Jens Lehmann.

Take a look at Hitz’s dramatic 94th minute equalizer for Augsburg

The goal was vital for Augsburg’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Augsburg are currently ranked 5th with 35 points. Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile are ranked 6th in Bundesliga league table and are in touching distance to qualify for the Champions League as well.

Continuing the theme we take a look back to some of the most famous and important last minute goals scored by goalkeepers around the world.
