Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has agreed to sign a contract extension with the club, but on one condition. The English international has demanded for higher wage in excess of £100,000 in his new contract. At present Walcott earns £90,000 a week, a contract which he had signed 18 months ago. He still has a year left his contract.
Theo Walcott, 26 will be completing 10 seasons at Arsenal this time and it was speculated few months back that he would leave the club for more first team action. The Englishman is extremely injury prone and remains out of action in almost every season for a considerable amount of time. His inconsistency and absence from action had forced Arsene Wenger to buy Alexis Sachez last summer in the right wing position.
In the present squad, Walcott has very little chance to break into the starting lineup. Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez features in Arsenal’s front three attcking midfielder positions.
Liverpool were linked with the attacker this summer and it was speculated that he might not sign a contract extension amd move out. Arsene Wenger in order to satisfy Walcott’s needs often used him as a striker. Walcott played as a striker in the season’s last game against West Bromwich Albion and also was given the edge over Olivier Giruod in the FA Cup final this season.
On asked if he would sign a contract extension, Walcott said: My agent has talked to the club, I enjoy playing for this club so I am just letting them crack on with things and I’ll continue playing football. If it happens it happens. We’ll just play the waiting game and see what happens but I’m sure it won’t be long.
Definitely. It’s not in my thought process at all. You don’t want to dwell on it, you want to play well and if it happens it happens.
I won’t let that delay the way I’m going to be playing this season. I can’t let that affect me, I want to do well for this club.
Theo Walcott might stay at Arsenal as Wenger has plans of using him as a striker this season. Walcott’s contract extension although would put Olivier Giroud’s starting position in question.
