Wenger confirms new RULE regarding arsenal’s goalkeeping position

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists he will stick with his policy of selecting David Ospina over Petr Cech in champions League.

This move backfired last season, but the Colombian goalkeeper shone for the Gunners last night as they took a well-earned point away to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ospina’s name in the starting line-up ahead of Petr Cech was bewildering, bearing in mind the Colombia keeper’s mistakes in the same competition last season as the Gunners began with losses to Dinamo Zagreb and then Olympiakos as sole summer signing Cech watched from the bench.

But this time Ospina made a number of fine saves from PSG striker Edinson Cavani, and Wenger believes he’s done enough to continue in the starting XI for European matches.

This will go down as a valuable point gained, and a high-risk strategy and gamble that reaped rich rewards.

The Frenchman also suggested, however, that this part of an agreement he has with his ‘keepers, in a bid to keep what he describes as two ‘world class’ players happy.

“David Ospina did play very well,” Wenger said after the game. “Tonight he showed his detractors that he is a very good goalkeeper, those who doubted him.

“Last year he made a mistake in the Champions League and everyone jumped all over him. He showed what he’s about tonight.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers.I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers.

“We have a rule that the keepers know (when they will play). It’s important to have clear rules like that.

“They know what the rules are for the season. If they change, I’ll tell them.

“On what he delivered tonight, he has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.”

Ospina’s excellence frustrated PSG, and their striker Edinson Cavani in particular, and justified what had appeared to be a risky selection in place of Petr Cech after his toils in this competition at the same stage a year ago.

Yet, despite the visitors trailing to Cavani’s header after 42 seconds, they clung on to the contest courtesy of their goalkeeper and Alexis Sánchez’s equaliser 12 minutes from time secured the draw.

Olivier Giroud and the hosts’ Marco Verratti were sent off in stoppage time but, while the Hungarian official’s decision to flash second yellow cards at both those players prompted widespread bemusement, Wenger could rejoice in Ospina having proved his pedigree.
