West Ham United vs Manchester United: Preview, Predictions, Expected Lineups and Betting Odds

Manchester United ended 2016 with a run of 10 unbeaten games as they stay close to the top-4 in the Premier League points table going into the new year. 2 goals in 2 minutes from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba gave United all three points from their previous game against Middlesbrough and Jose Mourinho will hope that he can start the second half of the season as he has ended the first half. They now face a tricky trip to the Olympic Stadium to face a West Ham side that is fresh from a loss to Leicester City. Slaven Bilic’s side are currently just 2 points off a place in the top half of the table but they have not been consistent enough to warrant one. They are expected to provide a decent fight making this game an important one for the Red Devils. Here is the preview of this game along with the team new, predicted lineups, predictions and betting odds:

The league game between West Ham United and Manchester United will be played on Monday, the 2nd of January, at the Olympic Stadium in London. The kick off is scheduled at 6:15 pm BST (10:15 pm IST)

Team News:

Slaven Bilic is still without the services of Alvaro Arbeloa, James Collins, Reece Oxford, Diafra Sakho, Simone Zaza and Gohan Tore for this game. Mark Noble was withdrawn in the loss against Leicester City in the previous round but he should be back in action to join the midfield against Manchester United.

Expected lineup (4-4-2):

Randolph; Nordveit, Reid, Ogbonaa, Cresswell; Noble, Kouyate; Antonio, Payet; Ayew, Carroll

Jose Mourinho is without the services of center back Eric Bailly who has already left for the AFCON. Michael Carrick missed the last game with an illness and is expected to be back for this trip to the capital while Wayne Rooney is still on the sidelines nursing his thigh injury.

Expected lineup (4-3-3):

De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Rojo; Hererra, Carrick, Pogba; Mkhitaryan, Rashford, Zlatan

Key Battles:

Paul Pogba vs Mark Noble:

Since getting back to his most preferred place in the midfield, Pogba has been effective all over the pitch and will be the biggest threat for West Ham in this game. Their midfield engine, Mark Noble will have to keep a close eye on him to make sure that he does not run the game to his will, if West Ham are to take anything from this game.

Dimitri Payet vs Michael Carrick:

The French international has not been able to thrive with the lack of quality around him but with Carroll and Ayew finding some form recently, he might be much more dangerous. However, he will be up against the experienced Carrick in this game and will have to be at his best for his side to get anything from this game.

Key Stats:

West Ham are unbeaten in their last four Premier League meetings with Manchester United (W1 D3) – they’ve never gone five games unbeaten them in their English league history.

Manchester United lost away at West Ham last season, in the last ever game at the Boleyn Ground – they’ve not lost consecutive away games against West Ham since December 2007.

Slaven Bilic could become only the second manager to remain unbeaten in his first four Premier League encounters with the Red Devils (Ruud Gullit the other).

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored three goals in Manchester United’s two previous encounters with West Ham this season (One in Premier League, Two in EFL Cup).

Anthony Martial has scored five goals in his last four appearances against West Ham in all competitions.

West Ham have won consecutive Premier League games at the London Stadium for the first time. They last won three home matches in a row in March 2016.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last four on the road (W3 D1); they haven’t gone five unbeaten in the Premier League since February 2015 (seven games).

Manchester United last won three consecutive Premier League away games in April 2014, when they enjoyed four successive victories – a run that also included a win over West Ham.

Paul Pogba has been directly involved in four goals in his last four Premier League appearances (two goals, two assists).

Dimitri Payet has created a league-high 72 chances in the Premier League this season – that’s 52 more than any other West Ham player (Lanzini – 20).

Betting Odds:

West Ham United: 8/13

Draw: 9/2

Manchester United: 31/10

Predictions:

Manchester United have been in decent form recently and will go for all three points in this game. However, Mourinho will know that a trip to the Olympic stadium will not be easy and will surely play cautiously. West Ham have been struggling but have at times shown the form of the previous season and they might even trouble United in this game.

Our Prediction: West Ham United 2-2 Manchester United
