He has created history, being the first Indian golfer to have achieved fifth place in the recently PGA golf championship. Still, on Friday, there was not much fanfare when Anirban Lahiri, along with his wife Ipsha, arrived at the Netaji International airport in Kolkata after a gap of two years. Lahiri who was welcomed by his mother with extreme passion will be here in the Kolkata for only two days before going back his home in Bangalore. The 38th ranked golfer in the World now, looked worried also as his golf kit did not land at the airport due to the mistake of airport authority on the day. It has reportedly gone to Bagdogra airport. But at the same time Lahiri has got the assurance from the airport authority to get it back by Saturday.
Lahiri, after having achieved the feat, has received the congratulatory a lot of messages in his mobile phone. But he informed on Friday that two out of those messages a galore were very much special to him. Speaking on the occasion, Lahiri said, “Leander Paes had sent me a very touchy message saying that he has been proud of my achievement and also asked me to make more achievements in near future which could bring pride for the country. I have been just overwhelmed by this message.” Lahiri informed he had another surprising congratulatory message from NBA superstar Andre Iguodala. He said, “Andre has also sent me a message asking me to carry on with the performance also in my forthcoming championships. But I have been highly enthused by the congratulatory message from Leander Paes. Like all other sportsmen and sportswomen in this country, I also am greatly inspired by Peas all the time.”
Expressing his notion on the question whether he is Jason Day of Indian golf, Lahiri reiterated, “Jason Day has been one of the best golfers in the World now. I would be truly grateful if I can ever play like Day.”
Despite having acquired such a feat in the world of golf, Lahiri does not seem to be content about his performance level. He added, “Still, I am not being able to show consistency. I have failed in several tournaments since the last year.” But on one occasion Lahiri is highly thrilled and elated with another achievement. He said, “Wining a berth in the rest of the World eleven for the President’s Cup has been truly a rare achievement for me. None of the Indian golfers has not been able to achieve this prestige till date.”
