India registered their first win by beating Canada 5-3 in the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah tournament played at Ipoh, Malaysia just few moments. It was an excellent match as both teams played some excellent hockey and created chances.
In the first quarter, India began well when in the 2nd minute Ramandeep passed the ball to Gurbaj but a tame effort was saved by the goalkeeper. Canada earned their first penalty corner in the 5th minute but were not able to convert the chance into goal. In the 6th minute a good combination play by Akashdeep and Manpreet created a chance for India, but was well saved by Candian goalkeeper. In the 9th minute Canada earned their second penalty corner but did not hit the shot well. In the 10th minute India earned its first penalty corner but did not convert the chance into goal. In the 12th minute India earned its second penalty corner but was well saved by goalkeeper and rebound attempt by Dharamvir did not give him any chance. In the 13th minute India earned a penalty corner . The 2nd penalty corner was converted by Rupinder Pal Singh by flicking into giving India 1-0 lead. At the end of first quarter it was 1-0 in favor of India.
In the second quarter Canada started well in the first minute itself but was not able to control the ball. In the next 7 minutes India made number of positive moves. In the 11th minute India earned another penalty corner as Rupinder Pal Singh hit ball and rebound shot was well above the net. India enjoyed possession and were attacking on frequent basis. At the end of 2nd quarter it was 1-0 in favor of India.
In the third quarter India started well by earning another penalty corner in the 2nd minute. The penalty corner was converted by Ragunath which was flicked at centre to give India a 2-0 lead. Again next 2 to 3 minutes India dominated the play. In the 7th minute India earned another penalty corner but goalkeeper stretched himself full-length to deflect the ball outside of the field of play. In the 11th minute India earned their 7th penalty corner but were not able to convert. In the 13th minute India earned one more penalty corner but goalkeeper saved it and a resulting counter-attack from Candada led by Oliver Scholfield left the Indian defense flat as he scored the goal for Canada to havle the defecit to 2-1. At the end of third quarter it was 2-1 in favor of India.
In the fourth quarter it was an action packed game as many 5 goals were scored. India began well by scoring a goal in the 1st minute when Ramandeep deflected a cross from left plank to increase India’s lead to 3-1. In the next minute India scored another goal when Gurbaj cross from rigth-flank and Ramandeep landed the ball into net to make it 4-1 in favor of India. In the 3rd minute Canada earned a penalty corner which Jagidsh Gill maximised to reduce the gap to 2-4. The score-line still in favor of India. In the 4th minute India scored another goal Satbir hit a shot from Mandeep cross to make it 5-2. In the 7th minute Canada scored the 3rd goal as Garcia sent the ball into D which managed to find its way through to David Jameson who made no mistake as the ball ended up in back of the net. At the end of the 4th quarter it was 5-3 in favor of India.
With this win India has four points in four matches. They now play Australia on 11th April.
