The Indian hockey team coach Paul Van Ass was surprised by the way the team performed in the recently concluded Sultan Azlan Shah tournament. The Indian team won the bronze medal after beating Korea in penalty shootouts and played some excellent hockey in the end part of the tournament.
The Indian team did not start the tournament well by drawing against Korea, losing to New Zealand, losing to Malaysia but the turnaround came when they beat Canada, World number 1 Australia and in the bronze medal against Korea.
The team played some aggressive hockey against World number 1 Australia and beat them 4-2 was a confidence booster for the team and they carried on their form in the match against Korea winning the bronze medal match in a penalty shootouts and got the medal.
It is a great start for Paul Van Ass who coaching India for the first time in high level performance against Australia. He also said that he expects better performances in the upcoming competitions. The coach also said that he is proud of the team how they performed and bounced back into the tournament to clinch the bronze medal is amazing.
The best part of the tournament was beating number 1 ranked team Australia by 4-2 and that motivated for the game against Korea which they won. In the first 3 matches, the defense was very weak and conceded goals in the last minute of the match and that’s why the team did not go into the finals but also said that he was happy with performance of few young Indian players. They need to work on their weakness and take more chances. This team can perform much better than this but has shown glimpses of competing with the best in the World.
