The Indians women’s hockey beat Italy in penalty shoot-outs 5-4 after drawing 1-1 in normal time in the 5th-8th place round match played at Antewrp, Belgium earlier today. It was a dominating performance by the Indian team but they missed too many chances of scoring the goals.

In the first quarter, India started off with a great attack in the 3rd minute but was well saved by the Italian goalkeeper. The Indians dominated the play and created chances but were not able to convert the goals. In the 9th minute, Pachela scored a field goal to give Italy a 1-0 lead. In the 11th minute, India missed another chance of converting a goal and in the next minute too India missed another chance. At the end of first quarter, Italy led 1-0.

In the 2nd quarter, India started attacking but missed another chance of scoring a goal in the 1st minute. Italy tried to attack but India was alert in defence. India earned a penalty corner in the 14th minute but did not trap the shot. At the end of 2nd quarter, Italy led 1-0.

In the 3rd quarter, India made another positive move. Rani scored a field goal in the 3rd minute to equalize the score at 1-1. In the 6th minute, India attacked once more but was well saved by the goalkeeper. In the next minute, India earned a penalty corner and was well saved by the goalkeeper. In the 10th minute, Italy asked for a review and Italy was awarded a penalty corner but was well saved by defender. In the 12th minute, India missed another chance of scoring a goal. At the end of 3rd quarter, the scores was equal at 1-1.

In the 4th quarter, India dominated the play. In the 6th minute, India missed another chance of scoring a goal. In the 9th minute, India attacked once more but was well saved by the goalkeeper. Italy tried to score a goal but did not succeed. At the end of match both teams were tied at 1-1 and the match went into penalty shootouts.

The first penalty shootout was taken by Italy and Pachelo scored the goal, India’s Navjot Kaur equaled at 1-1, Italy’s second penalty – M Abella did not score, India’s second penalty was not scored either. Italy’s third penalty saw Cascali scoring the goal. India’s Anuradha scored the goal to make it 2-2. The fourth penalty saw Italy scoring the goal and India’s fourth goal was converted by Rani to make it 3-3. Italy’s 5th was scored and India 5th shootout was also scored to make it 4-4.

In sudden death, India’s Rani scored the goal and Italy’s penalty was very well saved by the goalkeeper to help India win the match.

India will now play for 5th– 6 place on 4th July
