In Hockey India League the youngsters got a chance to play with experienced international players and learn this particular skill. Here we look at the top 5 drag flickers of HIL 2015. It is heartening to note that four of the five Top Drag flickers are from India.
- Ashely Jackson (Ranchi Rays)
Ashely Jackson plays for England. He was the captain of the Ranchi Rays in IHL 2015. He played a pivotal role in helping Ranchi Rays winning the Hockey India League 2015 title. He was the highest goal scorer in tournament with 12 goals including 2 hat tricks in the tournament. He scored 11 goals from the penalty corners and 1 from penalty stroke. Ranchi Rays played some excellent hockey throughout the tournament.
2. Sandeep Singh (Jaypee Punjab Warriors)
Sandeep Singh is an excellent drag flicker in India, who was neck to neck with Ashley Jackson of England in HIL 2015. He helped Jaypee Punjab Warriors to reach the finals of this edition. He scored at total of 11 goals of which 9 goals from penalty corners and 2 from penalty strokes. He also has an hat trick to his name in HIL. His contribution for Punjab team was immense. He has been a part of the Indian team and now with the Olympics coming up in 2016 the Indian team needs him as an experienced penalty corner specialist in the team.
- VR Ragunath (Uttar Pradesh)
VR Ragunath was another drag flicker who did well in HIL 2015. He played for Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the tournament and scored 8 goals from penalty corners and 1 field goal. He is an integral part of Indian team who did well in the Asian games 2014 winning the gold medal and getting a direct entry in the Olympics 2016 in Rio. When he is in a top form there is no dangerous penalty corner specialist than him and he makes the keepers to think a lot to decide on which side to go for defending the goal.
- Gurjinder Singh (Kalinga Lancers)
Gurjinder Singh is another Indian promising youngster who played in HIL 2015 for Kalinga Lancers. Despite Kalinga Lancers not performing well in the tournament Gurjinder scored 5 goals from penalty corners. He had played for India in the Champions Trophy tournament held in Bhuvneshwar in which India finished fourth. Though Kalinga Lancers finished 5th he was the only shining star.
- Harmanpreet Singh (Mumbai)
Harmanpreet Singh is one of the youngsters playing in Hockey India League 2015. He played for Dabang Mumbai who finished last in the tournament. He scored 5 goals from penalty corners. He had played a vital role of India Junior team retaining the Sultan Johor Baru Cup in 2014. He was named emerging player of the tournament in HIL 2015. This youngster can be part of penalty corner specialist group in the Indian senior in coming months.
