INDIA HALF WAY THROUGH WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2015

As both Men’s and Women’s team championship come through half way mark, in Tsakhkadzor, Armenia and  Chengdu China, respectively Indian men are placed in 5th position and women’s team is placed place among last two respectively.

Indian Men’s team lost 1.5 to 2.5 points in their fifth round on 23 April 2015 and remained in fifth position. India had won against Hungary 2.5 vs 1.5 point in their fourth round. Santosh Gujarati won his game against Rapport Richards where as the other three Harikrishna, Sethuraman and Sasikiran had drawn their match against respective opponents. After five rounds Cuba lead men’s tournament and India was in fifth position earning a total of 8 points among ten participating teams. In third round India had beaten Israel by 3.5 to 0.5 points. In second round India had drawn with china 2:2. India defeated Egypt in the first round.

The women’s tournament contested by 9 countries is on round robin system. The Indian team defeated USA by 3 points to 1 on 23 April 2015 of the World Women’s Team Championship. Koneru Humpy won against Ms. Abrahamyan and Soumya won against Melekhina, while the other 2 players Harika and Padmini Rout drew their matches. Georgia, Russia and China were the other teams to win their matches today. The Indian women’s team was defeated 1.5 vs. 2.5 by Russia on 22 April 2015 in the fourth round.  Koneru Humpy let a winning position slip out of her hands. Russia is placed second in the table Georgia kept its position at the top by winning the match against Kazakhstan with 3:1 score.  USA lost its first match in the tournament against Ukraine with 3:1, while Armenia won with the narrow score against Poland. China crushed Egypt with 4:0 and shares 3rd place with Ukraine and Armenia. Indian women remain at 9th position midway through the tournament. India was fortunate doing well against Ukraine in third round but Natalia Zhukova equalized the score by winning the critical final game to end in a draw. In second round India had also drawn with China after losing the first match with Kazakhstan.
