The Indian women’s boxing contingent sans five time World Champion and 2014 Asian Games Gold Medal winner MC Mary Kom rounded off a decent campaign in the 8th World Women’s Boxing Championships in Jeje City. Couth Korea courtesy S Sarjubala (48kg) and Saweety (81kg), who settled for silver medals.
In the first finals of the day, Sarjubala started aggressively and got the first round quite easily against Kazakhstan’s Kyzaibay .
The Kazakh staged a recovery in the second round and targetted the Indian’s body to slow down the pace of the bout and draw level. In the third round, Sarjubala came out firing on all cylinders but struggled to connect her punches. Kyzaibay was quick on her feet and was impressive when it came to taking evasive action. In the decisive fourth round, both the boxers took a step back and waited for the other to make the first move. However, the cautious approach worked to the world No.3’s advantage.
Saweety lost to China’s Yang Xiaoli in the finals and settled for a silver medal. India thus managed to improve its performance from a bronze in the previous edition to a couple of silvers this time.
Mary Kom did not participate in the tournament because of an injury and Sarita Devi was banned by the AIBA for her actions in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
