India with 1.3 million populations there are few sports that India are showing their power. There are some other games where we are no-voices. There are some sportspersons in the country who have done well in their respective sports irrespective of the national strength. So now we look at the strengths and weakness of Indian sports.



Cricket is game where India has been doing well in the past 10 years shows that India is powerhouse. India has shown that with the Indian Premier League which began 7 years ago has gained popularity. The Indian team have won the World Cup in 1983, T-20 World Cup in 2007, 50 Over World Cup in 2011, Champions Trophy title in 2013. The young cricketers are getting exposure by playing with top experienced international players. India had top players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman. Today’’ stalwarts are Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jaeja, and Ashwin.


Shooting is game where India has done well in international competitions.  Abhinav Bindra was the first Indian shooter to get an individual medal at the biggest stage of all i.e Olympics. Other shooters like Rajavardhan Singh Rathore have done the country proud. In the recently concluded Asian games 2014 Jitu Rai won the gold medal. Some female shooters are coming up, namely Apporva Chandela and Ayonica Paul have done well in the singles event in Commonwealth games team event 


It is one of the sports that India is getting medals at international level regulalry. Sushil Kumar is only Indian to get medals in Olympics in 2008 and 2012. Yogeshwar Dutt won the bronze medal in London Olympics. India medal hopes rise on this sport. In the Asian games 2014 India won 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronzes. With lot of training the Indians can get more young wrestlers and get many more medal for the country.


It is a sport that Indians  are doing well. India badminton players Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu are doing a great job for India. PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win back to back World Championship in 2013 and 2014. Apart from this some male shuttle players like Ajay Jayaram, Sourabh Varma, P Kashyap are also coming to limelight.


It is a game where India looks formidable. The Indian men’s team has won 7 successive gold medals at the Asian games. The women’s team also won 2 consecutive medals in the Asian games in 2013 and 2014. In Asian games 2014 the men’s team was given a fight by the Iran team but the experience of the Indian team helped them to retain the title.


Boxing has been an area of strength for India. Mary Kom won the gold medal in the Asian games 2014 and also the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. The men’s are not far behind as the likes of Vijender Singh has done very well in the boxing ring. In the Asian games 2 of our female boxers won the bronze medal as well 2 male boxers won the bronze medal.



Football is not a popular sport in India as compared to Spain, England, and Germany.  This game is being played mainly in Kolkata, Goa and Mumbai. Despite these limitation players like known Sunil Chettri, Bhaichung Bhutia is known worldwide. The Indian team has played Nehru Cup and did a good job. In the Asian games 2014 they were knocked out of the first round itself.  India’s women football team also lost in the first round itself.


The Indians are not a good team in basketball. They beat the strong team like China once but they need to perform consistently if they have to get better. The likes of Japan, Iran, Korea are much fitter and stronger side than India. The women basketball is not good enough to compete at the top level.


Volleyball is sport that requires strength and enegery to defeat the opponent.  The Indian team finished 5th in the Asian games 2014. The men team gets tired if the games drawn for longer duration or goes for the third –fifth set, and the opponent takes advantage of the weakness of the team. The Indian must focus on playing more international tournaments to improve the stamina so that this game can gain popularity.


It is a sport where India is nowhere near the top nations like USA, UK, China. The Indians do not have the stamina and strength to challenge much quicker opponents. In the Asian 2014 India won its first medal in Asian games. Sandeep Sejwal was the proud winner of bronze medal. 


It is a game where India needs to improve its standard. In the Commonwealth games 2014 the Indian men’s double of Achanta Sharath Kamal and his partner won the silver medal. In the Asian games they were no match to the speed of Korea. The women’s team also lost in the first round.


Hockey as revival sport

The Indian hockey team was at its peak when it won 8 gold medals in the Olympics, 6 in successive from the period of 1928-1954. The Indian team last won a medal in the Olympics was in 1972. After that period India did not qualify for the Olympics in 2008. They qualified for the Olympics in 2012 but finished last in the tournament. In 2014 the Indian team won the silver medal at the Commonwealth games in 2014 and a gold medal in the Asian games 2014. Winning the gold helped the Indian team to get a direct entry into the Olympic 2016. They also beat the Australians at their home turf which has given them a much needed boost ahead of important tournaments.
