Irish Boxer Katie Taylor has set her sights on equalling MC Mary Kom’s record of winning five successive World Championship titles when she steps on to the Boxing ring at the 2014 World Championships that begun on November 13, 2014 in Jeju City, South Korea.
Five time World Champion MC Mary Kom is not participating the World Championships due to injury and that allows Katie to equal Mary Kom’s record. One difference Mary Kom and Katie is that all of Taylor’s four previous titles have been at 60kg, whereas Mary Kom won her fifth consecutive gold in Barbados 2010 in the 48 kg category, after AIBA had dropped the 46kg category. Mary missed out on her sixth successive title in 2012 when she failed to participate in the tournament owing the birth of her third son.
When asked about Mary Kom, Katie said “It’s great to be in this position and have a chance to defend my title, go for the fifth time and have a chance to make history this week and equal Mary Kom’s record. She has been a hero for every female boxer around the world. What she has done for women’s boxing is incredible and everyone looks up to her. I’ve met her loads of times and we’ve had great conversations. She’s a Christian as well and we’ve spoken about that. She won it five times, different weights. It’s probably better to do it at different weights. I’m surprised I kept 60kg for so long . . . but she has been incredible.”
If Katie does win the title at the Jeju City, she will become only the second women Boxer to win the World Championships for five consecutive times.
