Two more Indian women wrestlers have qualified for Rio Olympics namely Babita and Khatri to take the Indian contingent of wrestling to a total of 8.
Khatri was given the Olympic berth in Greco-Roman 85 Kg weight category as Zhanberek was tested positive at the Asian Olympic qualifier. Babita too was given a Rio berth as Mongolian wrestler failed the dope test at the Asian Olympic qualifier in the 53 Kg freestyle event.
Last week Vinesh sealed a gold medal and Sakshi Malik secured Olympic berths in 48 and 58 Kg categories at the second Olympic qualifying tournament. This will be the first time that two women wrestler will be qualifying for the Rio Olympics for the first time. In London Olympics, only Geeta Phogat qualified was the lone female wrestler to qualify for Rio Olympics. It is a big achievement for Indian women wrestlers to qualify for Olympics after such hard work.
This will the first time that Indian wrestlers will qualify in all three categories men’s freestyle, female wrestling and Greco-Roman at the Olympics.
This is great news for Indian wrestling as 8 participants will represent the country in the biggest stage of all. Other wrestlers have shown that India can win medals from wrestling in the Olympics.
