Mairaj Ahmed Khan ended India’s skeet draught at the Olympics by qualifying for the Rio Olympics in 2016 after finishing 7th at the ISSF World Championships in Lonato, Italy yesterday. So far no skeet shooter from India had qualified for the Olympic Games.

Mairaj who shot an impressive series of 25,25,24,24,24 to a total of 122 his best score at an ISSF event was placed with six other shooters with the same score in the top eight slot. Top six shooters qualify for the semi-finals round. In a shootout between six shooters for four knockout slots, the Indian could only shoot three while four other shooters shot four and advanced to the semifinals. There was some more drama before the shot out as Mairaj had lodged a protest regarding a shot in the last series. According Mairaj he had shot the clay but the protest was dismissed by the jury.

It was a good performance by Mairaj in the tournament and it was a result because of training with a new skeet coach Ennio Falco of Italy was appointed by the National rifle association of India. He is the first specialized skeet coach for Indian shooters.

It is great news for Indian sports to see skeet shooter from India to qualify for the prestigious tournament and hope that he could perform well in the Rio Olympics.
