NO NEW QUALIFIERS FOR RIO OLYMPICS FROM NATIONAL OPEN ATHLETICS ON PENULTIMATE DAY

Women athletes Anu Rani of Railways and  Mayookha Johnny beat their own records in Javelin throw and Triple jump respectively of The 55th national open athletics championship being held in Kolkata on a penultimate day but the day did not add any new qualifiers for the Rio Olympics yesterday.

Anu threw a distance of 58.85 meters to break her own record of 54.85m set in 2013. Even Suman Devi of UP threw 57.15 meters, but they did not qualify for Rio Olympics as the target is 62 meters.

Mayookha’s triple jump put up her best to clear 13.78 meters, bettering her own record of by 0.07 m. Prajusha MA of Railways and Shilpa Chacko of Kerala finished with 12.79 meters but, they were placed on count back rule (counting the competitor’s misses during the event).

In Men’s 400 meters hurdle, Durgesh Kumar Pal piped his fellow teammate Ramachandran with a late burst of speed. Dharmaraj won the 2 Kg discus throw with a haul of 56.12 meters in the absence of Vikas Gouda (68.2m in April 2012) and Anil Kumar (60.07 in 2003) of Haryana. Jagdeep Singh won the men’s high jump clearing 2.16 meters as against a standing record of 2.22meteres of by Jithin C.Thomas in September 2012.
