Men’s Boxing:

Indian Boxers finished with a haul of four gold, one silver and 2 bronze medals in Doha International Boxing tournament on Saturday. Around 100 boxers from different countries participated in Doha International Boxing Tournament organized by Qutar Boxing Federation at Ali Bil Hamad Al Attiyah Multipurpose Sports Hall from 19-24 May 2015. This is a part of the build-up towards the 2015 October World Championships.

Commonwealth Games silver medalist L Devendro Singh (49kg), Shiva Thapa (56kg), Manish Kaushik (60kg), and Manoj Kumar (64kg) won the gold medals. The silver medal went to Gaurav Bidhuri (52kg), while Mandeep Jangra (69kg) and Vikas Krishan (75kg) bagged bronze medals.

In the finals on Saturday, Devendro beat Philippines Aldren Moreno 3:0. Former Asian gold medalist Shiva defeated Egypt’s HYM Abdelaal 2:1. Manish beat Moroccan Rabi Hamza 3:0, while Manoj thrashed Filipino Magliquian Nicole by a similar margin. Gaurav lost to Montassar Bouali 2:1 getting silver medal.


Women’s Boxing:

Indian women boxers rounded off a thoroughly commendable performance at the AIBA Women’s Junior World Championships, held in Taipei clinching three gold and two silver medals on the final day of the event on Saturday. Savita (50kg), Mandeep Sandhu (52kg) and Sakshi (54kg) struck gold for the country, while Soniya (48kg) and Niharika Gonella (70kg) settled for silver medals. Savita edged past her Ukrainian rival Kateryna Rohova 2-1 to clinch the first gold of the day for India. This was followed by Mandeep’s 3-0 triumph over Ireland’s Niamh Earley and finally Sakshi made it three in a row by out-punching American Yarisel Ramirez 3-0.

Soniya was the first to take the ring for India, against American Heaven Garcia but she went down 1-2 to open the Indian account with a silver medal. Niharika proved no match for Russian Anastasiia Sigaeva and lost 0-3 to settle for the second silver medal. Earlier in the youth competition, Jamuna Boro (57kg) had bagged a bronze medal after losing in the semi-finals.

Bhiwani Boxing club famous for having produced ace boxers like Vijendra Singh has produced Savita Gothra, Sakshi Dhanana both of whom won Gold medal and Ms.Soniya Gothra a silver medalist.
