Shame! Salman Khaan, IOA Goodwill Ambassador, forgets Dipa Karmakar’s name

It can happen only in India!

Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to enter the Olympic final at the Rio Olympic, but Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) Goodwill Ambassador Salman Khan forgot the name of India’s star gymnast Dipa Karmakar. He called her Deepika at the trailer launch of his brother Sohail Khan’s film Freaky Ali starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

On the same evening, Dipa made history by becoming the first Indian to qualify for the individual vault finals in her debut Olympics. She finished eighth in the qualifying round and will compete in the finals scheduled for August 14 this year.

When Salman forgot to say Dipa’s name and called her Deepika, a journalist nearby corrected him by saying the name is Dipti.

Salman nodded and said, “Yes, Dipti” except there is no Dipti or Deepti in the Indian Olympics’ contingent of 2016.

The controversy was related to Salman not being a sportsperson. Dissidents included former Indian sprinter Milkha Singh and Olympics’ bronze medallist Yogeshwar Dutt who expressed their displeasure about IOA’s decision.

However, Salman known to be a passionate motormouth, in an interview to Hindustan Times, questioned the selection of AR Rahman and Sachin Tendulkar as Olympics’ Goodwill Ambassadors. He pointed out that while one (Rahman) is not a sportsperson, the other (Tendulkar) has played only one sport and therefore, it was unfair that only he was being singled out by the media.
