9 lacs of Indians searched on Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu’s caste

According to Google; Indians search on PV Sindhu’s caste has gone through roofs as she won the silver medal in Rio Olympic. While a billion of us were rooting for PV Sindhu to outclass Spain’s Carolina Marin in Rio on Friday, about 9 lakh Indians back home were on Google, seeking for her caste.

On August search on the 21-year-old’s caste was relatively slow, but the velocity increased after  shuttler  from Hyderabad beat eight seed Tai Tzu Yiang in the pre-quarterfinals.

Since that game, the caste search saw a ten-fold jump after her stunning semi-final win over Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara. It just peaked on Friday after her silver.

On Saturday, Sindhu’s caste topped Google in India over her career and Friday’s final.

People from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana searched the most about Sindhu’s caste and not her silver medal. The two states’ tussle over the champion shuttler stems from the fact that Sindhu was born and brought up in Hyderabad but her mother belongs to Vijayawada.

Sindhu in the final lost the match to  Carolina Marin of Spain.

In the first set Sindhu defeated Marin, but in the next two sets Marin outclassed Sindhu and took away the Gold.

Sindhu’s silver medal came a day after Sakshi Malik has won bronze in wrestling.

While India was rooting for PV Sindhu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were googling her caste
