Chennai, Aug 23 (IANS) Leading jewellery chain NAC Jewellers on Tuesday decided to shower diamonds on Olympic medal winning shuttler P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik as well as gymnast Dipa Karmakar for their great performance at the recently-concluded Rio Olympic games.

In a statement issued here, NAC Jewellers said it would honour Sindhu with a diamond necklace worth Rs 600,000 for a winning silver medal, and one worth Rs 300,000 to Malik for winning bronze medal in the women’s freestyle wrestling while honouring gymnast Karmakar with Rs.100,000 for her great performance in which she just missed a medal.

NAC Jewellers also aims to further expand this initiative and create a platform to encourage budding sportswomen in the country, the statement added.

“It was a glorious stint for the Indian sportswomen at Rio Olympics 2016 and a proud moment to witness these young minds lead our country into historic victory across categories. We at NAC Jewellers are thrilled to honor these great sportswomen for their determination in the game and playing a significant role in putting India on the global map of sports,” Anantha Padmanabhan, Managing Director was quoted as saying in the statement.

“We are confident that this initiative will lay a stepping stone for us to continue our efforts in recognising such hidden gems of our country,” he added.

    The IANS was founded by Indian American publisher Gopal Raju as the India Abroad News Service. It was later renamed the Indo-Asian News Service.
