Indian men’s hockey team won their first match of Rio Olympics by beating Ireland 3-2 at Olympic Stadium, Rio, a few minutes ago. It was an exciting match as both teams played brilliant hockey. The match was filled with lots of penalty corner.

In the first quarter, the Indian team started off well. SV Sunil missed a chance in the 1st minute. In the 3rd minute, Nikkin Thimmah was not able to convert chance into a goal. In the 7th minute, Ireland also missed a chance of scoring a goal. In the 8th minute, India missed another chance of scoring a goal. In the 11th minute, SK Uthappa was not able to take a shot from the D. In the last 30 seconds, India earned back to back 3 penalty corners. The 3rd one was converted was converted by Ragunath to give India a 1-0 lead. At the end of first quarter, India led 1-0.

In the second quarter, Ireland began off well as they missed a chance in the 3rd minute. In the 6th minute, Nikkin Thimmah was not able to scoop a shot over the goalkeeper. In the 8th minute, Ireland earned their first penalty corner which was obstructed by the Ireland player. In the 11th minute, Ireland earned another penalty corner which went over the goalpost. In the 12th minute, India earned another penalty corner which was converted by Rupinder Pal Singh to left a corner of the goalkeeper. In the 15th minute, Ireland earned another penalty corner but could convert. In the last 26 seconds of the second quarter, India earned penalty corner which was saved by Ireland goalkeeper. At the end of 2nd quarter, India led 2-0.

The third quarter began off well for India. The Indian forward missed a chance in the 2nd minute. In the 4th minute, Nikkin Thimmah missed a chance of scoring a goal. In the 6th minute, Ireland was rewarded a penalty corner which went wide. In the next few minutes, both played positional hockey. In the 11th minute, India missed another chance of scoring a goal. In the last 27 seconds, Ireland earned another penalty corner which was converted by Jermyn to reduce the gap. At the end of third quarter, India still led 2-1.

In the fourth quarter, India began off well . India earned a penalty corner in the 4th minute which was converted by Rupinder Pal Singh to take 3-1. In the 6th and 7th minute, India missed chances of scoring a goal. In the 8th minute, Ireland earned 2 back to back penalty corners. The third one was reviewed by India and decision stood. In the 10th minute, Ireland earned another penalty corner which was converted by Harte to reduce the gap. In the 11th minute, Ireland was awarded another penalty corner which went wide of goal. At the end of the match, India won the match by 3-2.

This was their first win in Olympics after Athens. It is a much-needed boost ahead of big matches. They will their next match against Germany on 8th August.
