India beat New Zealand 3-2 in the Asia Oceania Group 1 second round tie at Christchurch earlier today and booked a place in the third round of the Asia Oceania Play-Offs. It was a dominating performance India’s singles duo of Somedev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri as they played some excellent tennis today after the doubles pair lost yesterday.
In today’s first reverse singles match between Somdev and Marcus Daniell, Somdev defeated his New Zealand opponent in straight sets 6-4 6-4 6-4. In the first set Somdev broke Dainell in very first game and was brilliant throughout the set. Somedev eventually won the first set 6-4. In the second set Dainell fought back but Somedev outplayed him and won the second set 6-4 and took a 2-0 set lead. In the third set, Somdev did not hold on to his serve but cashed on Dainell’s serve. Somdev won the third set 6-4 to equal the tie 2-2 with the final rubber between Yuki Bhambri and Micheal Venus becomes the decider.
In the decider, Yuki beat Venus 6-2 6-2 6-3. Yuki began the match on a positive note as he broke Venus’ serve in the very first game and did not allow Venus to comeback in the set as he won the first set 6-2. In the second set too, Yuki dominated Venus as he broke Venus early to clinch the set 6-3. In the third set, Yuki dashed Venus’ bid for a comeback as he sealed the third set 6-3 and with that Yuki sealed the tie in India’s favour and pushed them closer to a spot in the World Group Play-Offs. India will face Uzbekistan in the third round of Asia Oceania qualifiers for a place in the World Group Play-Offs.
