Indian Tennis struggling at international level?

Sania Mriza along with Ms Hsieh lost in finals of the Brisbane open. The pair of Paes and Raven Klaasen and the Indian pair of Mahesh Bhupati and Saket Myneni won their first round and will face each other in their second round. Leander paes and Klaasen lost in the finals of Chennai open.

Indian Tennis had some great players like Ramnathan Krishnan, Vijay Amartaj , Ramesh Krishnan Prakash Amtraj competing in singles matches at highest level in the past. Ramnathan Krishnan in 1954 became the first Asian player to win the boy’s singles title at Wimbledon; He was also the first Indian to reach twice semifinals at Wimbledon in 1960 and 1961. Ramesh Krihnan as a junior player in the late 1970s, won the boys’ singles titles at both Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarter-finals in the 1980s. Even in the recent times Leander Paes, Saina Mirza, Mahesh Bhupati and Somdev Devarman are the names to reckon for India mainly playing doubles apart from Somdev who plays singles. But for the past few years the Indian Tennis is struggling to get good new tennis players who can carry forward the glory of the past. Leander Paes is the only Indian to get a medal at the Olympics in 1996. He won the bronze medal in singles event.

The Australian Open, The US Open, The French Open and Wimbledon are the top events happening each year. In singles Novak Dojkvic from Serbia, Andy Murray from Great Britain participate in the men’s and in women’s singles the likes of Venus Williams, Maria Sharipova participate in the tournament. Unfortunately we do not have any Indian these days to compete in singles. In these tournaments Saina Mirza participates in mixed doubles and women’s doubles where she pairs up with non-Indian players. Saina Mirza has done the country proud by winning gold medal with Saketh Myneni in the 2014 Asian games in mixed doubles event. Apart from this she won bronze medal in women’s doubles event in Asian games 2014. Yuki Bhambri won the Bronze in the Asian games and also bronze in men’s doubles partnering with Devesh Sharan. Saketh Myneni did well by winning a silver medal in men’s doubles also in Asian games 2014.

Leander Paes has been the pillar of Indian tennis. Despite being 40 year plus his attitude towards the game is great. He has won the gold medal at the Asian games 2008 in Doha in the mixed doubles event. The contribution of Mahesh Bhupati cannot be discredited away. The pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati has done a lot for Indian Tennis. But their parting away as pairs is disheartening to Indian Tennis lovers. These two legends of Indian Tennis must give tips to these new Indian players. Yuki Bhambri and Somdev Devrmann played in the Davis Cup tie against Serbia, Leander Paes gave the motivation to young players by talking to them in between interval.

New tennis stars like Yuki Bhambri, and Saketh Myneni have done well in domestic and Asian circuit tournaments. But their competition at Grand Slams have been not yet noticed mainly due to lack of fitness while playing long and grueling matches. Somedev Devraman who was doing well until 2013 has also been struggling for form in events like four grand slams losing in the first or second round itself.

The dwindling pool of young players is a matter of concern. To get medals at the Olympics and Grand slams the Sports Authority of India and All India Lawn Tennis association (AILTA) must chart out a specific plan to catch new youngsters and provide grueling training for long time.

By playing at different tournaments the likes of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni can improve as player. In 2015 Aircel Open Saketh Myneni and Mahesh Bhupati is participating in the men’s double event.

In India there is no women player playing in singles which is hampering the Indian tennis. In the ITPL Rohan Bopanna and Saina Mirza were only two Indians getting opportunity to participate in tournament.  The organizers of ITPL must be advocated for including more Indian players. The Indian player must focus on fitness, stamina and their play. They must train hard and be competitive in tough games.  The infrastructure in the country is pretty decent and the SAI must invest on new grounds so that the youngsters can train hard on these ground. The best is the RT Khanna stadium at New Delhi.
