Calendar slam under threat for the American Serena Williams? It could be the case for the World no 1 as she withdrew from Bastad open due to an elbow injury.
This is what the world no 1 has to say after her second round match against Klara Koukalova
“I felt some bother yesterday, then it got better, but during the warm-up this morning the right elbow started hurting again. I couldn’t serve, so it was going to be a problem for the match. I don’t know exactly what is all about. I know it is some sort of tendinitis. I really don’t want to make things worse, but rather find a way to get better. Unfortunately I didn’t have a lot of time to deal with the injury and fix it. I played a lot of tournaments, but playing here wouldn’t have made things better. It is the same problem I had at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Both the physio and the doctor suggested it would have been better not to go on court today” revealed the World No 1.
Before the start of French Open the World no 1 revealed that she is having issues with her elbow which made her to perform way below her standards. The American in fact withdraw from Rome and wasn’t quite sure whether she can play her best tennis but indeed she was able to play her best tennis and went on to win Roland Garros.
With the same problem arising again Serena should feel concerned heading into the US Open and her dreams of capturing the calendar slam might be in danger.
Serena has won 21 grand slam titles and will bid to tye Steffi Graff’s tally of 22 which is a record in open era.
“Now I will enjoy some free time and rest. I will do what is best for my body” said Serena, who is supposed to play the World Team Tennis competition and the WTA of Stanford to start her American summer campaign.
Will she be fit and ready to compete in the coming US Open. Let’s hope for good and hope Serena will reign once again at the US Open.
