The Flushing Meadows of New York is all set for an epic finale. The World No.1 Novak Djokovic is set to take on the No.2 Rafael Nadal in men’s singles finals of the US Open. This will be the pair’s third showdown in four years at the US National Tennis Center as both them advanced to the finals in contrasting fashion. Our Featured Writer Suneeth Nair takes a closer look at the epic Final come this Sunday. The top seeded Serb has to battle out a four hour battle with Stanislas Wawrinka in his way to his semis. A five setter semis must have sapped up his energy for sure. An eventful, erroneous semis ended 2-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in favour of the Serbian. Nadal on the other hand had a rather easy semi finals as he dimissed eigth seeded Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-6(1), 6-2. Nadal has improved his hard court unbeaten tally to 21-0 this year. With a straight set win over his opponent, Nadal will be lot fresher than his Serbian opponent. The battle is expected to be mouth-watering as the two top seeds try to impose superiority over the other. Nadal who was sidelined due to a knee injury last year, will be hoping to continue his good run on the hard court this year with another win. Djokovic on the other hand will not only fight for the title but also to continue his reign at the top of the ATP rankings.

The familiar rivals will be against each other for a record 37th time in their career in which Nadal leads 21-15 on win loss record. With both the player knowing each other so well, it’s expected to be another long grueling five setter finale. The French Open champion was on all praise for Djokovic when asked about his opponent. “Novak is an amazing competitor, his results says he is probably one of the best players I have ever seen. He’s a great champion and will be a tough final for me but I hope to be ready for that.” An optimistic Nadal said. Djokovic Wary of Nadal’s Form: A tired Djokovic said he had to regroup after the five setter semi finals. “I was thinking whoever wins the game is going to win the match. I told myself I was going ot fight again” said Novak about his 21 minutes service game. The Herculean effort has sapped lot of energy from the seasoned campaigner and he was vary of his Nadal’s form. “I will have to find regroup myself before another clash. A final is not going to be easy. But I have been there many times before and I know if I put my best effort out there, I could win” Sunday will host the Women’s Finals between the top seeded Serena Williams and second seeded Victoria Azarenka. This will be a rematch of the last year’s title clash at Flushing Meadows. The Women’s Finals will be followed by Men’s Doubles Final were the Indo – Czech pair of Paes Stepanek takes on the first time finalist Alexander Peya and Burno Soares.
