Somdev Devvarman‘s hercuelean efforts went in vain as Yuki Bhambri fails to win the final reverse singles tie against Filip Kranjinovic and put India into the World Group Play-Offs. With this victory, Serbia qualifies for the World Group and India will once again fight out in the Asia-Oceania group stages.

Yuki was trailing 3-6 4-4 yesterday in the decider tie when the rain forced the players to go in and come on court to resume their match today. Kranjinovic was hardly challenged when the play began as he easily won the second set 4-6. The third set too was a walk in the park for the Serb as he went on to clinch it 4-6.

After a 0-2 scoreline at the end of day 1, India’s doubles duo of veteran Leander Paes and Rohan Boppanna came back from two sets down to clinch the lone doubles tie 1-6 6-7 6-3 6-3 8-6 against Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic on saturday.

In the first reverse singles rubber, Somdev Devvarman made a stunning comeback after losing the two out of the first three sets against a higher ranked Dusan Lajovic 1-6 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-2.

Somdev and Yuki failed to get the 5-tie Play-Off to a flier as they lost their singles match on Friday. Yuki was no match for 107 ranked Lajovic as he was brushed aside 3-6 2-6 5-7 by the Serb. On the same day, Somdev went down to Kranjinovic 1-6 6-4 3-6 2-6 in the second tie to give the visitors a 0-2 lead after the day 1.

Serbia were without their star players Novak Djokovic and Jarko Tipsarevic for the Play-Off match against India.
