In an Sportzwiki exclusive, we catch up with the Czech tennis star, Tomas Berdych, ahead of the upcoming ATP World Tour finals in London.

A tournament he is competing in for the fifth consecutive year. We discuss a range of topics with the world number 7 seed, from his favourite venue to his preferred past times. Our writer Will Godley caught up with the current 7th seed in Men’s tennis and this is what Tomas Berdych had to say during the interview –

Will – What is your favourite surface to play on?

Tomas Berdych – I like tennis in general so I don’t really care about the surface. You can see my results…I can play good but also bad on every surface. I grew up playing on clay and hard courts during the winter. I like tennis so I can accept every surface.

Will – As the only recognised top Czech player nowadays, do you feel the pressure of a nation to perform as the country’s star man?

Tomas Berdych – I dont feel any pressure from anyone…Maybe from Tomas to himself! I like to be a great example for kids & to show them that sport is the best hobby in life.

Will – What is your favourite venue to play at?

Tomas Berdych – I think every player would say that the favourite venue is connected to whereabouts they get their best results. I like the O2 arena as I am here for 5th time and obviously playing at Grand slams. I love every venue with all the fantastic people from the tournament and great fans. That is it!

Will – How do you like to relax away from the tennis court?

Tomas Berdych – I love music, movies, my social media channels, photography, watches & cars.

Will – How important is the ATP World Tour finals in London for someone competing in the tournament? How does it rank compared to a Grand Slam?

Tomas Berdych – On my private ranking, the Finals rank really high as well as grand slams. I must say I am proud to be here for the fifth year in a row!

Will – What would you have been if you weren’t a professional tennis player?

Tomas Berdych – I dont know but something with love. Something that would give me a lot of joy to do and in which I could have fun…

Will – What has been your favourite match in your career so far?

Tomas Berdych – I remember winning the Davis Cup for my country, and many more great matches. It’s not easy to pick one!

Will – What other sports do you follow?

Tomas Berdych – Soccer & ice hockey…

Will – Best thing about being a tennis player?

Tomas Berdych – To win against Tomas Berdych.

Will – Worst thing about being a tennis player?

Tomas Berdych – To lose against Tomas Berdych.

Tomas even took out some extra time to advice young aspiring Tennis players out there.

Will – My younger brother called Tom wants to be a tennis player like you. What advice would you give to him or any other young, aspiring player?

Tomas Berdych – Love what you do. Enjoy every day on the court, every practice and trust that you can make it…You have to have it in your heart and all the hard work you put in, will pay off! Good luck and all the best Tom!

We must say a big thank you to Tomas for taking time out from World Tour Finals preparation to answer our questions. We really appreciate it. Good luck in London big man!
