India has some great tennis players and here we look at the top 5 tennis players who have done the country proud.

5. Saketh Myeni

Saketh Myeni is one of upcoming young tennis players in India. He turned into professional player in 2011. He has 9 ITF Future singles title and 14 doubles title. His performance in the recently concluded Asian games was good as he won the silver medal in doubles event teaming with Sanam Singh. He became popular winning the gold medal in mixed doubles partnering with Sania Mirza  at the Asian games 2014.


4. Somdev Devvarman 

Somdev Devvarman is a rising tennis player for India with lot of potential. He started playing tennis in 2002 came into limelight with a win in F2 Kolkata Championship in 2004. He has won Gold medal in Singles event at Commonwealth games 2010. He also won the Gold medal in singles and doubles event in Asian games 2010. He also won the bronze medal for India in the team event of the Asian games 2010. His career has been hampered due to injuries. He made his Davis Cup debut in 2008. In the recently concluded Davis Cup tie against Serbia he won a grueling 5 set match against Dusan Lajovic.

3. Saina Mirza

She is one of the top and highest ranked female tennis players in Indian Tennis History. She has won three major mixed doubles of 2009 Australian Open, 2012 French Open and in the 2014 US open. She also has broken through in top rankings in doubles paring with Cara Black. Saina Mirza recently won the gold medal in mixed doubles event in the Asian games 2014 pairing with Saketh Mireyni and also won the bronze medal in women’s double event in the Asian games 2014.  The latest laurel for her was winning WTA Finals in October 2014. 

2. Mahesh Bhupathi

Mahesh Bhupathi has been one of the top Indian tennis players. He has 4 grand slam doubles title out of which twice are in 1999, one in 2001 and one in 2012. His pairing with Leander had been great. He had won the gold medal in Asian games with Leander Paes in Doha 2006. It is unfortunate that they are not playing together in the recent times. Bhupathi also participated for India in the Davis Cup. He has played 46 Davis Cup matches winning 28 and losing 18.


1. Leander Paes

Leander Paes has been one the greatest Indian tennis player that the country has produced. He plays in the doubles event in the ATP tour and the Davis Cup. He has fourteen grand slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles. His contribution to India in the Davis Cup is unimaginable. He won the bronze medal in the Atlantic Olympic Games in 1996. He has appeared in six Olympic Games in the time period of 1992 to 2012. He is blamed of avoiding the recent Asian Games.
