The last grand slam of the year is all set to commence on August 31st. The 134th edition of US Open kick-starts at Flushing Meadows with stars like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Williams sisters featuring in day one action.

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams will be heading into the tournament as the firm favourites to win the title.Although there are favourites to win the title there are quite a few players who can spring in a surprise. A prime example is Stanislas Wawrinka winning the French Open which was bolt out of the blue.

Let’s have a look at the players to watch out for in the US Open 2015:

Rafael Nadal:

There were times where Nadal has headed into this tourney as one of the heavy contenders for the title. But with the form the Spaniard is in, this season watching him going past the quarter-finals would be a monumental task as he might face the Serbian as early as in the quarter-finals. Nadal’s build-up to the US Open has been poor after his third round exit at Rogers cup against Kei Nishikori and second round exit against Lopez at Western and Southern open. Nadal can certainly improve his game at this very event as faster hard courts suited his game play in the past. However, Nadal has his work cut out from the very first round as he faces the young gun Borna Coric from Croatia. Borna Coric was mighty impressive on his first meeting against Nadal last year at Basel. Although, Nadal will be counted out as one of the favourites to win the title he will be definitely the player to watch out for on how he is progressing.

Stanislas Wawrinka:

Wawrinka has become one of the most unpredictable force in tennis currently. No one can forget the run he had in the French Open this year. Wawrinka after his triumph at Roland Garros haven’t been much successful in the tournaments he played. Wawrinka’s results in the pre-build up tournaments to the US Open have also been average. The unpredictability he brings into the game keeps his opponents guessing. Wawrinka who managed to reach the quarter-finals last year might reign supreme at Flushing Meadows this year. Wawrinka can possess a serious to the top seeds like Murray and Djokovic.

Kei Nishikori:

Kei Nishikori who was the finalist last year has improved leaps and bounds. The most important aspect which has been improved in his game is his consistency. Nishikori has his odd struggles against injuries and he has found it hard to fight against it. After beating Nadal in the quarter-final clash at Rogers cup Nishikori withdrawn from Cincinnati due to an injury. However, the no.4 seed will be up and running and would like to replicate the same success in the US Open as he did in 2014.

Tomas Berdych:

Tomas Berdych, who had a tremendous start to the 2015 season by taking down Nadal in the quarter-final clash in Australian Open. Berdych stayed competitive in the first part of the 2015 season and his later results hasn’t been much impressive. Berdych whose game is absolutely lethal particularly in hard courts struggled in the ATP events at Rogers cup and Cincinnati. However, one cannot count off the Czech as he can possess a serious threat to the top seeds on his day.

David Ferrer:

The veteran Spaniard is fighting off a serious elbow injury and couldn’t return to any event since his withdrawal from Wimbledon. He couldn’t even participate in the pre-build up tournaments in Rogers cup and Cincinnati. Even though Ferrer has been struggling with the elbow injury for many months he confirmed his participation in the US Open this year. David Ferrer over the years has been known for his fighting spirits and after missing those many events he would like to make merry especially at Flushing Meadows.
