US Open 2015: Novak Djokovic and Marin Cilic advances to the semi-finals

World no.1 Novak Djokovic and defending champion Marin Cilic advances to the semi-finals of the US Open 2015.

The first semi-final in the day session featured the Croat taking on the Frenchman Jo- Wilfried Tsonga. The match turned out to be a cracker as Tsonga staged a miraculous comeback after losing the opening two sets. However, the comeback went in vain as Cilic registered a 5 set victory (6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(3),6-4) over the Frenchman and booked his place in the semis.

The Croatian was up and running in the opening two sets winning it 6-4, 6-4. While things looked grim for Tsonga he managed to turn the tables around staging a miraculous comeback in the third and fourth set and winning it 6-3, 7-6(3).

Although, Cilic didn’t maintain a high first serve percentage he fired down 29 aces and won 78% of his first serve points. Cilic converted 3 break points on 14 attempts while the Frenchman managed to break the Croat’s serve only once in 10 attempts. Both the players almost matched each other in winners count as Cilic hit 63 winners, four more than Tsonga.

The second semi-final in the night session featured the Serb Novak Djokovic taking on the Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. The match turned out to be a physically demanding game, but the Serb managed to come out on top defeating Lopez in four sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2).

After being totally outplayed in the opening set, Lopez came back strongly taking the second set 6-3. Although it didn’t affect Djokovic as much, as he was winning most of the long rallies. Apart from the serve of Lopez which troubled Djokovic, he didn’t have more weapons in his arsenal to trouble the World no.1. After showing much resistance in the fourth set, Lopez went down in the tie-breaker which sealed the semi-final spot for Djokovic. Lopez made 48 unforced errors and converted only one break point in 6 attempts.
