Rio Olympics 2016: Analysis – India lose to Germany 1-2

The Indian men’s hockey team lost their second group match to Germany in the dying moments of the game. It was an outstanding performance by the Indian team to hold the defending champions to 1-1 until the end moment but a mistake by P Sreejesh cost them the game.

In the first quarter , both teams played aggressive hockey in the match. In the 6th minute, a striker snatches from Muller and gives it to Ramandeep Singh who can’t take the chance. After that, both teams played attacking hockey and did not give each other a chance to score goals. At the end of first quarter, the scores were 0-0.

The second quarter began off well for the German team who held the ball possession. In the 3rd minute, Linus Butt gave the pass to Niklas Wellen who scored the goal to give Germany 1-0 lead. In the 4th minute, SK Uthappa was handed a green card and had to sit out for 2 minutes. The Germans attacked and did not give India to many chances to come into their D. In the 8th minute India earned their first penalty corner and a brilliant drag-flicker by Rupinder Pal Singh equalled the score at 1-1. In the next minute, Nikkin Thimmah missed a chance of scoring a goal. India got 2 more chances at the end of the 2nd quarter but could not convert. At the end of the 2nd quarter, the scores were equal at 1-1.

The third quarter began off well for German captain as Furtse hit the shot well wide off the goalkeeper P Sreejesh in the very first minute .Both teams attacked very well and did not give each other to score goals. In the 7th minute, India earned a penalty corner but was well saved by Jacobi. Another saved by was made Jacobi in the next minute also. India played attacking hockey and put the pressure on the German defence. At the end of the third 3rd quarter, the scores were equal at 1-1.

In the 4th quarter , India began off well as they had a chance of scoring a goal but it was well saved by Jacobi again in the 2nd minute.  In the 3rd minute, Germany earned a penalty corner but Surinder Kumar saved it from going into a goal. In the 8th minute, India earned a penalty corner but it was well defended by Germans. Both teams tried to score goals. In the last 3 seconds, Reur scored an excellent goal to give Germany a 2-1 win.

India will play their next match against Argentina tomorrow.
